UNIDO’s Trial on Black Liquor Viscosity with Yash Pakka Limited Brings Energy Efficiency to the Forefront

Workshop Held to Disseminate Findings of Trial With Black Liquor Viscosity Reduction System Using Liquor Heat Treatment Technology.

A workshop on black liquor viscosity reduction was conducted on April 6 by United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) at Yash Pakka Limited’s plant in Ayodhya. Pakka, a pioneer in the compostable packaging industry, had conducted a trial using 100% agro pulp black liquor through liquor heat treatment (LHT) technology, leading to the reduction of black liquor viscosity by 50%. The workshop-cum-demonstration was held to disseminate the findings of project initiatives and interventions of the trial. Representatives of Central Pulp & Paper Research Institute (CPPRI) also participated in the workshop.

This initiative has been undertaken to enhance the energy and chemical recovery efficiency of the agro and wood-based paper mills and boost sustainability and productivity in Indian paper mills. With this project, paper and packaging companies will be able to extract the chemicals used in their industry more efficiently, thereby resulting in higher energy production. Presenters at the workshop included Dr. RK Jain, UNIDO Technical Expert, Dr. MK Gupta, CPPRI Director, Dr. A K Dixit, CPPRI Scientist and Mr. A K Dhawan, GB Power. Attendees of the workshop included teams from top companies in the space including Yash Pakka Limited, Tamil Nadu Paper, Ruchira, Bindal and Kuantum.

Pakka has been at the forefront of developing compostable packaging solutions and continuously introduces new technologies to improve the process and enhance its environmental benefits. LHT technology reduces liquor viscosity by heat treatment, which is depolymerizing high molecular weight lignin into lower mass components. It is being considered a unique initiative to revolutionize the paper industry.

Mr. Thomas James, Operations Head, YPL, said, “At Yash Pakka, we continue to look for ways to improve the efficiency of our operations in a sustainable manner which will help the planet Earth. This project opens avenues for us to improve energy efficiency in our recovery boiler section, which aligns with our company’s philosophy. We look forward to working closely with UNIDO, CPPRI and GBP to scale this pilot project to our regular operations.”

Mr. Jagdeep Hira, India Business Head, YPL, expressed his views on the workshop, “Pakka is committed to working for a cleaner planet, and multiple approaches are being explored to drive innovation, encompassing everything from innovative manufacturing techniques to the design of novel products for the future. It’s our pleasure to host the workshop with UNIDO on the pilot plant demonstration for Liquor Heat Treatment, which we believe will set a new productivity standard for related companies to follow. This will especially prove to be a significant breakthrough for all paper manufacturing units that use agro-residue as the primary raw material. When it comes to producing compostable food-packaging products using 100% agro-based raw materials and biofuels, Pakka has always been a trendsetter. We look forward to many more new technology adoptions and learnings for increased efficiency moving forward.”
