Advanced Hardcoat Technologies for the Automotive Industry

Advanced Hardcoat Technologies for the Automotive Industry

At K 2022 Momentive Performance Materials will be presenting the latest developments in Silfort hardcoat technology for use in demanding automotive exterior applications. Among other things, the precise and material-saving digital coating of three-dimensional moulded parts with the optimised inkjet technology can be experienced live at the trade fair. Other topics include easy-to-clean paint surfaces for sensor elements and protective coatings with improved sustainability.

Highly transparent Silfort Hardcoats from Momentive are high-performance siloxane resin-based scratch-resistant coatings that expand the range of uses for plastics in exterior and interior applications. Applied to surfaces in ultra-thin layers, they reliably protect against damage caused by UV radiation as well as mechanical and chemical stresses. As a result, their colour, gloss, light transmission and other physical properties are preserved over long periods of time. In many cases, plastic parts which are protected in this way, can replace conventional, heavier materials such as metals and glass and thus contribute to reduced CO 2 emissions.

Three-dimensional inkjet printing saves material

Together with FPT Robotik, Momentive has further developed the use of digital inkjet printing for such applications in a way that these requirements can be met and also combine ecological with economic advantages. With the correspondingly optimised process, only the single drop which is actually needed leaves the nozzle. This free-form digital printing process can be used over large areas and delivers high-quality results on component edges and on parts with complex shapes. At stand B15 in hall 6 visitors can experience live how the digital coating process is used. There, the print head is guided robotically over the component in a pilot booth and simulates how the scratch-resistant coating is applied to the contours of a three-dimensional polycarbonate component using drop-on-demand inkjet technology.

Momentive will also provide information on other new technologies, including easy-to-clean paint surfaces for sensor elements such as Lidar or cameras, as well as protective coatings with improved sustainability benefits. On the one hand, the focus is on shortening the application process for curing the coating systems to save energy and time. On the other hand, products with reduced solvent content will be presented.

Application-optimised portfolio

Momentive’s hardcoats are approved by and in use with the world’s leading automotive manufacturers. Silfort AS4700-SP1 is a protective clearcoat that gives automotive exteriors in clear and black polycarbonate high scratch, abrasion and weather resistance. This special coating was developed for the use of bell spraying on large parts with complex shapes and facilitates long-term cleaning of the surfaces. Silfort UVHC5000K1 is the latest generation of UV-curable, highly weather-resistant protective clearcoats for automotive exteriors and meets the most important global regulations for automotive headlamp applications.

The Silfort TAC2000 anti-fog coating, applied to the inside of headlamps and sensor covers, prevents condensation.

Silfort UVHC7400 is a highly scratch and chemical resistant UV-curable clearcoat for automotive interiors and displays. It is suitable for application with the new digital inkjet printing.

A.J. Plast and Brückner Maschinenbau Contracted Another Highlight Project for a High-Speed BOPP line at K Show

A.J. Plast, one of the leading film manufacturers in South-East Asia, and Brückner Maschinenbau have one of the longest partnerships in the BO industry. Their current joint project is already Brückner’s 15th film production line: a 5-layer, 10.4 metre wide BOPP line with a line speed of 600 metres per minute and an output of 7.5 tonnes per hour.

The project impresses with high production efficiency and takes an important step towards zero emissions, energy saving and carbon reduction. The technology used will not only drastically reduce energy consumption, but also reduce water consumption. The newly designed double air heat exchanger in the kiln process preheats fresh air and takes energy recycling to a new level.

A.J. Plast owner Kittiphat Suthisamphat says: “With our new line we increase productivity and reduce our energy consumption at the same time. That’s two of our major goals for our future film production focusing on environmental sustainability – and with Brückner at our side we will reach them.”

Xaver Sedlmeier, Sales Director at Brueckner Group Asia-Pacific: “We are very proud of this new project. In close cooperation we have designed a film stretching line that is completely tailored to the needs of A.J. Plast and the needs of the markets. It is always a pleasure to master challenging projects with the A.J. Plast team.”

” All Machines Must Speak the Same Language”

” All Machines Must Speak the Same Language”

Interview with Thorsten Kühmann, Managing Director of VDMA Plastics and Rubber Machinery, at the K 2022

Mr. Kühmann, OPC UA, a global language of production is considered a prerequisite for machines to be able to communicate with each other across manufacturers. This topic is playing a major role at K. What can be seen here?
Here at the K, some 40 companies from eight countries are participating in an OPC UA demonstration project. To do so, they have selected a total of 85 machines at their respective hall locations. Each of these machines has an OPC UA logo and a QR code that visitors can scan with their smartphones. They are then taken to the UMATI internet platform, where they can see live data from the respective machine. For greater clarity, we have installed a large dashboard in the VDMA Dome where visitors can navigate each individual machine to see what defined data it provides. The most important factor is for all machines to speak the same language, and all use the same system. We have noticed that the interest of the visitors is quite considerable, as are the number of enquiries.

Does that mean that OPC UA is driving digitalisation in production?
Yes, in two respects: the direct benefit is the very fast creation of transparency. You know what data is present, and you can pick and choose which data is important. This transparency then enables a better control of processes. But the much greater benefit lies in the possibility of offering digital services in the future. To do this, you absolutely need a large amount of data from the field. At the moment, this is not yet available, because the entire infrastructure is not yet in place, but this is where the greatest potential lies. OPC UA is paving the way for this, so to speak.

How far have you advanced in the implementation of plastics and rubber machinery?
We have already come quite far in some core machine areas, such as injection moulding or extrusion. Now we are moving on to particle foaming, for example, and of course to the periphery. So, for example, this includes temperature control units and hot runner units, or liquid silicone metering. This is the horizontal level: the machines that are next to each other in a production hall can communicate with each other. Another strand is vertical networking to the MES system that centrally processes the data of a factory. And now the material flow is also included. At K, the new interface for Material Supply System will be presented: the OPC 40086-1. This is a so-called Release Candidate. That means it is conceptually ready but can still be supplemented and adapted, which signifies that we have already established a solid foundation for OPC UA in the area of plastics and rubber machinery.

What are the next steps?
We’re aiming to close the gaps. We still have machines that are not integrated. In addition, in spite the solid progress it has made, internationalisation must be pushed further. Because the whole thing only really makes sense when as many countries as possible are involved; only then can you really communicate across manufacturers. At the moment, we have reached the point where we can collect a lot of data. The next thing we need is a trustworthy platform to which this data can be delivered.

Don’t many companies shy away from sending their own production data off-site?
Processors in particular are still very cautious about OPC UA applications. They are worried that their data will not be handled carefully and that, in the worst case, their competitors may even gain access to their data. Part of the problem is that such data platforms have so far only been offered by individual companies or small consortia. Users obviously don’t trust them. That’s why we are heading in a completely different direction. We are trying to establish a trustworthy, neutral platform, and as the VDMA, we are therefore participating in the Manufacturing-X funding project launched by the German government, which aims to do just that. Once the framework of the platform has been set, i.e. once questions of governance, data security or even liability have been clarified, anyone can basically use this platform under these conditions. It is important that we establish such a platform, because otherwise we run the risk of big data providers taking over the whole thing, which is something no one in the industry wants, either on the customer side or on the machine manufacturing side.

To what extent will this benefit the circular economy project, once everything is well established?
First of all, through the rapid transparency, which makes it possible to better control machines and processes with the help of the collected data. This is important for the circular economy because it allows you to improve energy efficiency, for example. You can see exactly where and how much energy is being utilised within the entire system, allowing for a better grip on the energy cycle. In the case of the material cycle, the aim is to improve the processing of recycled materials in a manufacturing company, for example. This is more challenging than with virgin materials because recycled materials are sometimes less homogeneous. With the help of OPC UA and the associated exchange of information, the processing parameters of the machines and devices involved can be coordinated more precisely, and in a more targeted manner. These are important examples of optimised cycle management.

Automation: The Answer to the Lack of Skilled Operators and High Staff Rotation

Automation: The Answer to the Lack of Skilled Operators and High Staff Rotation

Automating the end-of-line and reel handling provides benefits, which include doubling production, reducing salary costs, and savings energy consumption

The lack of skilled operators and high staff rotation are two principal headaches for factory managers, which in recent years have been exacerbated by two new problems. On one hand, the increase in the number of jobs offered by service companies has led to a decrease in the number of people willing to work at the factory. On the other hand, Covid-19 has led to a higher food packaging demand, while simultaneously creating staffing problems, due to pandemic casualties and the danger of having direct contact with products.

Automation is the solution to all these challenges. It makes the difference in reference to costs, production, quality of the final product and energy efficiency. Furthermore, as a result of automation, workers do not have to touch the products, as the whole process is automatic. Converters require slitters that are able to simultaneously, manage exceedingly complicated jobs and maintain the highest OEE possible. Changeover is critical. An uncomplicated cantilevered machine is operable only 30% of the time. With the use of presently available added value solutions, such as double turret rewinders, automatic knife positioning, automatic core positioning or automatic taping, this ratio is up to 70% higher. Moreover, a higher percentage is possible if each step occurring after slitting, such as labelling, wrapping, or palletizing using robots connected to the slitters, is automated.

In regard to the primary production plant benefits, the effects of end-of-line and reel handling automation are less dependent on operator experience, as a new operator is able to achieve optimum results within a short period of time. The results include the following: the automated machine simplifies complex processes; increased high quality productivity (owing to automated processes avoid human error and increases productivity); improved labour management (due to reductions of the required workforce, labour costs, and sick leave); sustainability (as a result of automated processes optimizing energy consumption and reducing material waste in eachprocess, thus creating more sustainable solutions and a lowering production carbon footprint); and return of investment in less than one year (due to high productivity as well as immense savings in energy and salary costs).

Comexi is constantly innovating. Presently, the company offers solutions that are more autonomous and effective: Closing Loop automatically reads and corrects the grammage to be applied in the laminating process; GeniusPrint has maximum print setting accuracy at the touch of a button; Automatic Pre-set Positioning is a full setting for slitting machines with maximum time savings and minimum material waste; Automatic Video Inspection is a camera-operated video inspection system to ensure maximum quality with a full-speed operating machine; and the Comexi End of Line Reel Handling that implies less workforce for similar jobs and reduces energy consumption.

Comexi Laser: Key Technology to That Makes a Difference and Optimizes Production

Comexi Laser: Key Technology to That Makes a Difference and Optimizes Production

Control, precision, and speed define this tool which customizes, differentiates, and performs a wide gamma of applications and finishings

Comexi, a specialist in solutions for the flexible packaging printing and converting industry, has consistently been a forerunner of converting equipment manufacturers due to the company’s global vision of the entire printing and converting process. Furthermore, since 1954, the company has acquired deep market knowledge and expertise. With the objective to remain at the forefront of converter demands, Comexi has not only identified future trends and needs, but has also begun the development of solutions that will greatly assist converting companies for years to come.

Comexi Laser is the integrated solution that differentiates, the revolution of the flexible packaging industry. This innovative tool customizes, differentiates, and simultaneously, performs a wide gamma of applications and finishings that include: micro perforations, macro perforations, design windows, pre-cut adhesive labels, alpha numeric codes, bar codes, security systems, and easy open applications. All of this is possible with only one piece of single equipment, the Comexi Laser.

Packers have long incorporated lasers into their machines, only to discover that subsequent to their use, packer efficiency is reduced. For this reason, eliminating this step in the process is preferred, and allowing converters to work with lasers, which has led to an increase in the demand for these types of solutions.

The Comexi laser system includes several patents, which includes: one for tension control and another for doubled-sided lasering without a turning bar. The tension control patent ensures material flatness throughout all the entire scoring process, which is mandatory if one layer material penetration is required while maintaining an intact barrier layer. The double-sided lasering patent permits lasering on both sides of the material within the same pass without the use of a turning bar, which would drastically reduce the performance of the machine.

Comexi’s Removable Label Solution

Converters want to have a removable label solution for single-dose or fast-food products such as snacks or chocolates. Their objective is to be able to eliminate the zipper, which offers long-term benefits, but also has a high cost and more complex manufacturing process. Furthermore, receiving packaging that includes resealable features is the intention of converters.

The current common process for manufacturing resealable packaging includes a label inserter and a die cutting machine. Packaging has a process that begins with the placement of the label, followed by die cutting of the desired shape. This process is extremely inefficient, as die cutting machines are predominantly limited, in regard to width, due to the die cutting roller bending during usage with larger widths. Consequently, the performance of the entire converting line is low; the addition of a label and die cut is a process performed after slitting. This additional step and process increases packaging costs. Furthermore, die cutting rollers must be changed for each application, thus the required flexibility for promotions is extremely limited. The die cutting process is unable to precisely control the depth of the cut, thus consistently destroying the barrier (there is a high risk of damaging the label if the cut depth is not controlled).

Nevertheless, the laser + in-line labelling + slitting system, in which Comexi excels, offers several advantages, including: extreme precision (regardless of material thickness, thus allowing for the penetration of only the necessary packaging layers, and ensuring that the packaging barriers remain closed until opened by the end customer); the use of an embedded laser system software that alters the design shape within minutes (requires no die cutting matrixes, and offers the possibility of using multiple laser heads in order to simultaneously score every up on the web, thus drastically increasing the productivity).

Presently, with the use of Comexi laser systems, a completely new level of high added value applications can be achieved, thus exponentially increasing the usability of flexible packaging

Offset Printing: the Best Choice for Sustainability and Recyclability

Offset Printing: the Best Choice for Sustainability and Recyclability

Comexi continuously distinguishes itself by searching for more innovative sustainable flexible packaging solutions with a lower carbon footprint

Comexi, a specialist in solutions for the flexible packaging printing and converting industry, has made the most transparent commitment to sustainability and Recycling. Repeatedly, the company has distinguished itself by searching for more innovative sustainable flexible packaging solutions with a lower carbon footprint. These include efficient energy management, less material loss, lower ink consumption, as well as plastic usage and solvent reductions. The objective of Comexi is to provide technology that not only makes processes substantially more sustainable, but is also operable with sustainable materials. Comexi believes in solutions that combines automation, high quality, fast changeovers, and flexibility.

As a result, the CI offset printing technology has become the unrivalled option for sustainability and recyclability. This is a solvent free technology, uses curing EB inks and coatings, has no solvent emissions, consumes less ink and less energy, prints a wide range of substrates (including extremely thin films), and facilitates the transition from the traditional laminated and multimaterial structures to monomaterial structures (both laminated, and frontal printed with overprint varnishes).

EB curing provides the optimal solution for recyclable packaging, as it replace several complex laminations with more recyclable and efficient solutions by reducing the number of layers (EB inks and coatings are highly resistant to chemicals, sealing, heating, and scratch). During PE reverse printing, the partial crosslink process increases the thermal resistance of the external packaging layer. In regard to surface printing, the EB coating provides high surface protection.

The Comexi CI offset printing technology perfectly meets the stringent needs for rapid, high-quality printing, while offering the most competitive operating costs

“We Are Plastics” As a Driver of the Circular Economy

“We Are Plastics” As a Driver of the Circular Economy

The initiative “We are plastics” – consisting of the major associations of plastics manufacturers, processors and machinery manufacturers – will be presenting itself for the first time to the international trade public, including the media, at K, the world’s leading trade fair for plastics, in Düsseldorf.

In addition to the extensive programme at the special K areas of Plastics Europe Deutschland and VDMA Plastics and Rubber Machinery, as well as the initiative’s own presence at the booth of the Gesamtverband Kunststoffverarbeitender Unternehmen (German Association of Plastics Converters – GKV), the associations now provided information about their goals, tasks and resources at a press conference following the official opening media event of the trade fair.

Linear becomes circular: advances and challenges of the transformation
The initiative, which sees itself as a guide for and driver of the circular economy, reported on the progress and challenges of the transformation, its own activities, but also its own expectations regarding the political guidelines that are necessary to achieve a circular plastics economy. The leading themes of the K-Show – climate protection, circular economy and digitalisation – play an important role in this. Investments in new and established sorting and recycling processes, design for recycling, and the development of new raw material sources in increasingly climate-neutral production processes are action points on the way to a circular economy, as the sponsoring associations of “We are plastics” explained. They also noted that a re-thinking in terms of material and its applications is already in full swing.

The circular economy helps reduce material consumption and save energy, thereby making a positive contribution towards climate protection. This represents a decisive advantage – especially in times of rising energy and material costs.

According to forecasts, plastics consumption worldwide will increase by around 20 percent by 2026, which underscores the importance of the material, and highlights the responsibility that accompanies it. In particular, there must be a significant change in the way plastic waste is handled. It must be considered as valuable material that makes up an important part of the resource base. The waste must be regranulated, constituting the basis for new plastic products. This will save energy, because regranulates consume less energy than new plastics. Consequently, the circular economy also contributes to a positive CO2 balance.

Experiencing the circular economy at K
Establishing a circular economy requires firm action and the cooperation of many players. At K 2022, raw material manufacturers, machine manufacturers and processors will show how this can be achieved. New, recyclable materials and products will be on display, as well as the technologies needed to manufacture them. At the Circular Economy Forum on the exhibition grounds, machine manufacturers will use operational machinery to demonstrate what is already possible today – from sorting and shredding plastic waste through regranulating, to the finished product made from recyclate. The digitalisation of processes plays a major role in this regard. The circular economy will only work at its full potential if companies within the value chain cooperate across the board. This also means that information on production and materials will be made available not only within the production line, but across company boundaries. For example, traceability of materials at the end of a product’s life facilitates sorting and therefore high-quality recycling.

Plotting the political course
In addition to corporate commitment, the right course must now be plotted at national and EU political levels. According to the “We are plastics” initiative, in order for a circular greenhouse gas-neutral plastics industry to become a reality, new priorities in the political agenda are urgently called for. The goal must be to ensure the continuation of the industry’s production processes – without having to shut down plants. If necessary, this also includes government support for a reliable energy supply, as has now been initiated by the Gas Commission in Germany to limit gas prices.

However, “We are plastic” sees only what it considers to be initial superficial steps. What still needs to be done at national level now is:

  • The approval procedure times for industrial plants need to be significantly reduced up. Permits in Germany take four to five times longer to be issued than in the USA. For companies to invest in sustainable technologies and efficient plants, approval procedures must become internationally competitive.
  • Sufficient affordable renewable energy must be made available for the German plastics industry; this is the only way to succeed in turning away from fossil fuels for electricity and heat.
  • In order to be able to make investments in the circular economy, companies need planning security and political support. “We are plastics” therefore advocates a market-driven and technology-open framework for raw material supply and the circular economy to accelerate the industry’s path to climate neutrality. The fact that key technologies such as the capture and use of CO2, the location of industrial plants and the rapid development of wind farms are discriminated against in many places is slowing down change.
  • The announced national strategy for the circular economy must be developed in 2023 through a multi-stakeholder approach, for example also via value creation platforms such as “We are plastics”, where the relevance of plastics as a material for the green changes in energy, building and construction as well as mobility, are understood and reflected upon.

During K, international and national experts will discuss the current changes in global economic and energy systems, possible ways to increase the resilience of the industry, and the decisive – also political – levers for achieving a circular greenhouse gas-neutral industry at the special show in Hall 6, the central dialogue forum of the trade fair.

The plastics industry will consistently pursue the path towards a circular economy. It has the strength, the motivation and also the expertise. As the first international plastics trade fair in three years, K 2022 is being held at exactly the right time, but also at a particularly challenging one. For visitors, it is a source of inspiration and a booster of the circular plastics economy, showing how more circularity and resilience go hand in hand.

Borealis Unveils Its New Co2e Emissions Calculation Tool Neoni at the K 2022

Borealis Unveils Its New Co2e Emissions Calculation Tool Neoni at the K 2022

  • New digital tool is first in the industry to offer grade-specific calculations for polyolefins
  • Neoni to contain cradle-to-gate CO2e emissions data for over 500 Borealis grades produced in Europe
  • EverMinds in practice: helping value chain partners make informed decisions to accelerate circularity

Borealis announces the launch of Neoni, a new carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e) emissions calculator developed by the Borealis Digital Studio. The digital tool is the first in the industry to offer CO2e emissions data down to the grade level for polyolefins. Neoni – which will be showcased in its demo version at the K 2022 – will in the beginning contain calculations for approximately 500 Borealis polyolefins grades manufactured at Borealis locations in Europe. In line with the EverMinds approach to accelerating circularity by way of value chain collaboration, Neoni will enable Borealis customers to make informed decisions on which materials can best meet their own circularity goals.

Digital tool Neoni heightens transparency of CO2e emissions data
As the first industry tool to break down CO2e emissions by product grade, Neoni unites the strategic key elements of digitalisation and circularity to provide more transparency to Borealis customers in the decision-making process. Created by the in-house Borealis Digital Studio based in Brussels, Belgium, Neoni is populated by data on hundreds of grades from Borealis portfolios, with additional commercial products being added in successive stages to the tool. Neoni thus presents CO2e emissions for a wide range of materials, from virgin, fossil feedstock-based solutions, to renewable feedstock-based grades in the Bornewables portfolio of circular polyolefins, but also among those in the Borcycle portfolio of mechanically recycled polyolefins.

Neoni offers a partial carbon footprint of products from Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) in the form of cradle-to-gate CO2e emissions1. In other words, the calculation includes all CO2e emissions incurred up to the moment the grade leaves Borealis facilities, whereby the tool will soon offer customers the option to calculate additional CO2e emissions incurred from Borealis to their own operations, thus further enhancing its usefulness. Neoni will be rolled out towards the end of the year, at which time the number of Borealis grades contained in the tool will have reached over 500. In addition to polyolefins grades, data on hydrocarbons will also be added. The results from the tool will be accessible to individual customers on the MyBorealis platform.

“We are proud to be the first in our industry to design and launch an own CO2e emissions calculation tool that enables our customers to differentiate among actual grades rather than averages for polymer types. Neoni is an innovative tool that helps identify which material solutions are most effective in supporting CO2 reduction and circularity. We also encourage our customers to give us feedback on the tool so as to enhance its usefulness in future,” says Chris McArdle, Borealis Vice President Circular Economy Solutions & New Business Development.

“Providing greater transparency is key to accelerating plastics circularity. This is what we mean by re-inventing essentials for more sustainable living.”

K 2022 will take place from 19 to 26 October 2022 in Düsseldorf, Germany.

We invite you to “Innovate Collaborate Accelerate” together with us by visiting Borealis and Borouge in Hall 6 at Stand A43, where the new Neoni tool will be demonstrated.

Complete Lines for the Entire Extrusion Industry

Complete lLines for the Entire Extrusion Industry

For manufacturing virtually all kinds of extruded semi-finished products, battenfeld-cincinnati offers the right machinery and equipment, from customized single components all the way to optimized turnkey lines. The extrusion specialist based in Bad Oeynhausen, Germany thus serves customers from the pipe, profile and board industries as well as producers of film, sheet and granulates. “The special feature of our complete line is that they not only consist of perfectly synchronized individual components without any interface problems, but also come entirely from a single source”, is how the group’s Managing Director and CEO Gerold Schley describes its product range’s unique selling point. At the K, battenfeld-cincinnati will visualize its complete line competence for the first time by unveiling the new, consistent design of its pipe extrusion lines, this year’s winner of the coveted IF Award.

It is only logical, that the top issues of circular economy, digitization and climate protection at this year’s leading world trade fair precisely reflects what is on the mind of the entire plastics industry. “Our motto ‘Sustainable solutions worldwide’ has lost none of its actuality, so we are presenting extrusion equipment in Düsseldorf this year which meets our customers’ demands for concepts offering energy efficiency, space-saving footprints, low maintenance, flexibility and high performance”, Gerold Schley emphasizes.

Water management and new design for the pipe industry

At the K, battenfeld-cincinnati will unveil the new complete line standardised design, with which all pipe extrusion lines will be presented from 2023 onwards in the battenfeld-cincinnati corporate colours. Apart from the visual effect, the functionality of the new design is the most important attractive feature: optimal accessibility and user-friendliness including easy cleaning features are the main attributes. All aggregates starting from the extruder to the calibration and cooling units and the vacuum tank, right up to the cutting saw and the tilt table, are manufactured in-house by battenfeld-cincinnati, perfectly matched not only technically and now also visually, without any interface problems, and integrated into the intuitive-to-operate BCtouch UX control system.

battenfeld-cincinnati offers complete lines for the pipe industry to cover an enormous diversity of applications, ranging from drip irrigation in agriculture right up to large-diameter pipes for water management. Both these extremes will be shown at the K booth. In large-diameter pipes, a new record has actually been set. The first lines to produce pipes up to 2,700 mm in diameter have been delivered. Two highlights of the large-diameter pipe extrusion lines are the pipe die with Optimelt, providing ideal melt homogenization with lowest melt temperatures to minimize sagging. With the completely new constructed 4 m long segments of the downstream unit battenfeld-cincinnati addresses the enormous dimensions of the equipment and the related transport problems. For the first time, there are vacuum tanks and spray baths which come in segments only 4 m long. These single aggregates can easily be transported and are easy to assemble on the production site.

Visitors to the K booth can witness battenfeld-cincinnati’s drip irrigation expertise by a video presentation of the new line set up for customer test runs in its technical lab in Bad Oeynhausen. The highlight here are the drippers, which come in a design both simple and ingenious to ensure a very even continuous water dispensation. During the extrusion process these drippers, developed by battenfeld-cincinnati with a partner company, are shot through the pipe die and fully welded into the pipe at once while it is still hot. Drilling or punching holes in the drippers for the water outlets are no longer required. At the same time, the design of the drippers ensures a long service life on site without clogging of the water outlets with limescale, soiling or plant growth.

Another novelty at the K booth is the small solEX NG, which completes the high-speed extruder series for pipe extrusion at its smallest size. From now on, the solEX NG 45 will be available in addition to the four solEX NG models already existing in the sizes of 60, 75, 90 and 120 mm. A striking attribute of this series is the combination of internally grooved barrels with a matching special screw geometry, which offers several advantages: up to 40% higher outputs, about 10 °C lower melt temperatures and 15 % less energy consumption.

Ideal extrusion solutions for eco-friendly products

Floor coverings based on highly filled plastics have experienced enormous growth in recent years. These are often PVC-based formulations. In view of the sustainability discussions, it is becoming apparent that PP will take on a leading role in this area and partially replace PVC.

The requirements for floor coverings in terms of absence of tension, flatness and thickness tolerance are extremely high due to the following processing steps, such as printing, as well as the later application area. The semi-crystalline structure of PP makes the task even more difficult.

It turns out, that for the production of environmentally friendly floor coverings made of PP the Multi-Touch roll stack from battenfeld-cincinnati is very suitable. This was clearly demonstrated in practical use by several first customers. This unique roll stack, equipped with up to nine cooling rolls for pre-calibration and re-calibration, ensures a long phase of intense contact between the board and the cooling rolls after the melt has left the flat die. The cooling of the top and bottom side takes place almost simultaneously. In this way, a dimensionally accurate, visually attractive semi-finished product with ideal flatness and lowest thickness tolerances is created, which is perfect for flooring applications. Yet not only for floor coverings, but also for manufacturing refrigerator panels or other surface panels made of PS or PP, the roll stack is in demand internationally and already being used in many countries. At the K booth, a Multi-Touch roll stack will be exhibited, so that interested customers can exchange views with the relevant specialists about its wide range of applications, which even include the production of thin film smoothed on both sides.

battenfeld-cincinnati also offers perfect extruders for the PVC industry. The most recent proof is the new pelletizing extruder series aglomEX, available either with or without electrically driven shear gap adjustment (EMS). These extruders are suitable not only for virgin material, but also for PCR goods originating, for example, from the Rewindo collection system. The immediate eye-catcher on the model aglomEX 114 to be showcased at the booth is the processing unit lengthened by 6 D, with which all five models have been fitted. In this way, the extruders not only meet the demand of the PVC industry for capacity to process a range of raw materials as wide as possible, but they also achieve up to 20% higher output rates in response to the general call for high efficiency.

On course towards fully automatic extrusion lines

Automation and digitization not only facilitate daily production processes, but also fulfill the requirements for high efficiency in production, reduced set-up times and low scrap rates. Impressive examples are the systems developed by battenfeld-cincinnati for pipe and sheet production and presented at this year’s K. Fast dimension change (FDC) is a system which enables changes of pipe dimensions within a wide range of diameters at the push of a button during production. Not only the melt gap on the pipe die, but also all downstream aggregates adjust themselves simultaneously to the new pipe dimensions without any manual intervention. So, pipe manufacturers are able to fill even small-volume orders efficiently and to minimize the amount of scrap as well, which makes their production eco-friendlier. Similar helpers in daily production are on offer for sheet and board extrusion lines. For instance, combined operation of the extruder and the melt pump in sheet extrusion significantly facilitates start-up. This saves time and costs and minimizes start-up scrap. Automatic adjustment of the flat-sheet die and the roll stack, as well as the roll compensation system, also simplifies the operation and increase the efficiency in production.

At the K, battenfeld-cincinnati will also present Steady flow from its extensive range of individual modules, which is the solution to reduce pressure fluctuations in PVC extrusion. In the counter-rotating conical twin screw extruders frequently used in PVC extrusion, pressure fluctuations inside the die are unavoidable, due to the chamber profile. Yet these fluctuations may degrade the quality of the semi-finished product. Steady flow takes care of measuring the pressure at the screw tip, and on that basis constantly readjusts the screw speed. This minimizes pressure fluctuations and consequently pulsations in the melt flow, which in turn ensures significantly better semi-finished product quality and reduces the amount of scrap.

Gerold Schley is confident: “With our trade fair presentation, we will impressively demonstrate that we have understood the needs of the industry and are offering solutions. These range from optimized individual components to complete lines, including digitization tools as well to facilitate daily production and to enhance production efficiency in every aspect”. He is looking forward to many interesting and above all face-to-face conversations in Düsseldorf.
