OQ’s Supply Chain Strengthens Customer Centric Delivery Model for ISC Market

OQ’s Supply Chain Strengthens Customer Centric Delivery Model for ISC Market

  • Huge growth in supply chain capacity, resilience and agility over recent years makes OQ the ideal polymer partner for Indian companies operating in the plastics sector.
  • Indian subcontinent identified by OQ as a market with great global potential and is a strategic priority for the company.
  • OQ will be present at the upcoming PlastIndia event (February 1-5) in New Delhi on the ground floor, Hall 2 – C4.

OQ, the Oman-based enterprise that specializes in PP and PE grades for flexible and rigid packaging solutions, continues to build on the strength of its global and regional supply chain networks that enable it to serve customers throughout the Indian subcontinent.

In the past few years, the company has increased the volume of containers shipped per month from 900 to around 4,500 – a growth of more than 400%. During the same period, OQ has improved its operations in 8 ports across India and another two ports within Indian Subcontinent. Our team has now the ability to distribute at least 40% of our shipment to Mundra and Nhava Sheva directly with 2 days transit – as opposed to 10-15 days in the past. We are also able to serve all Inland Container Depot (ICD) destinations in India.

This steady growth has been enabled by a series of strategic partnerships with logistics and transportation companies, five operating in the sea container business and another three which handle OQ’s inland trucking needs.

Dawood Al Rahbi, Vice President – Global Supply Chain, commented: “We are better placed to provide efficient, agile and reliable shipping to our customers in the Indian market.

“As the highly anticipated PlastIndia event approaches this February, OQ affirms its commitment that we are here to do business and support the development of the region’s polymer industry. We see huge potential here and want to play our part in realising that potential.”

Scheduled for February 1-5 and held in New Delhi, PlastIndia has grown into a must-attend event for both the regional and global plastics industry, with plastics producers, processors and users of plastics gathered under one roof to explore opportunities and build new relationships.

For OQ, the event is a tremendous opportunity to showcase its ability to support the local plastics market and the wider Asian region.

OQ’s supply chain and logistics operations are overseen by a team of 34 employees, 20% have focused roles in supporting the ISC market. The team is spread across Muscat, Suhar and Singapore, those in Muscat being primarily responsible for handling shipments for the Indian subcontinent and are available on a 24-hour basis to address customer requirements in the region.

This reflects the priority of India being a very strategic market for OQ. Thanks to the capacity and resilience building that has taken place across the supply chain in recent years, the company is able to serve India-based customers in a very efficient and agile manner. For example, key OQ customers have been already taking advantage of the features of an auto shipment intimation. This feature is well received by OQ customers who receive an automated email upon completion of order stuffing with their order details along with sailing and expected arrival dates.

“We have come a long way since we had just three employees managing all logistics out of Muscat,” Al Rahbi added.

“We are the first to launch this automated service in India. We are well placed to face up to challenges that may impact the industry in the future. For example, shorter transit times present a challenge of making shipping documents available to customers on time – we already have systems and processes in place to ensure our customers in India are served promptly and efficiently each and every time.”

Windmöller & Hölscher and Theurer.Com Work Hand in Hand

Windmöller & Hölscher and Theurer.Com Work Hand in Hand

Two innovation leaders cooperate to take an important step towards further digitization of the workflow with the IoT system RUBY.

Windmöller & Hölscher (W&H), a manufacturer of machinery in the flexible packaging market, and the leading provider of ERP/MIS software for the printing and packaging industry theurer.com will go common ways concerning the W&H product RUBY.

RUBY is the IoT system for optimizing packaging production with regard to the digitalization of the value chain. By intelligently improving parameters, higher productivity and better quality are achieved. Thanks to data-based error detection and alarms in real time, packaging production also becomes more efficient.

The focus of the cooperation is based on a plug and play concept for the new connectivity module RUBY Connect 4 Flow, which digitizes the manual order process at the machine. This enables W&H machines, initially limited to the business units of printing and extrusion, to be networked via RUBY with the C3 ERP/MIS software from theurer.com.

The aim is to create a standardized solution for the digital transfer from C3 to the W&H systems and from the W&H systems back to C3. In thisway, the transfer of order data and machine settings, as well as production feedback, take place digitally. It allows experts to prepare the job with all relevant machine parameter settings like temperatures, tensions etc. conveniently from the office and to send all this data digitally to the subsequent job level of the different machines. All that remains is to select the next job from the list and all machine parameter settings are already done at the push of a button.

The cooperation brings great added value for W&H customers: There is less integration effort during installation, the degree of automation can be directly increased and human error settings can be reduced. “We are pleased to create new benefits for our customers. Thanks to the cooperation, RUBY will be networked even more efficiently. This does not only save time and prevents errors but also ensures maximum transparency as well as production control,” reports Stefan Brinkmeier,Product Manager for Connect 4 Flow at W&H.

The concept was already presented in October 2022 at EXPO, W&H’s in-house exhibition, and met with great interest from customers. Currently, the interface and data architectures are being coordinated and programmed.

theurer.com offers its customers many advantages with C3 as the leading software for the printing and packaging industry: From digital production orders via MDC/DMI to the transmission of orders to machines and now the connection to RUBY. Nevertheless, RUBY remains an open system that can be networked with other ERP systems than C3.

Graphene Nanotubes Prevent Static Electricity Buildup in TPU Hoses

Graphene Nanotubes Prevent Static Electricity Buildup in TPU Hoses

  • Thermoplastic polyurethane hoses enhanced with graphene nanotubes demonstrate a combination of electrical conductivity, high flexibility, and good abrasion resistance.
  • Cost-efficient, durable hoses are already used in the flour-milling, pharmaceutical, and wood processing industries.
  • Stable, permanent anti-static properties combined with high performance allow hoses to meet strict industrial requirements.

In various industries with special operating conditions, when dry bulk materials are conveyed by compressed air through a nonconductive hose, there is a risk of the accumulation of electrical charge due to friction. This can lead to sparks, resulting in damage to electronic components, or even fire or explosion. To prevent static electricity buildup and arc discharge, conductive material enhanced with metal wire is used as the key component for the manufacture of this type of conveying hose. Use of traditional conductive agents like carbon black requires high concentrations, which results in detrimental effects on the mechanical properties of the final product, including reduced flexibility.

“Replacement of a standard compound with TPU modified with graphene nanotubes results in stable, homogeneous conductivity of the final hoses, without compromising their strength or flexibility. By adding only 0.4–0.5 wt% of graphene nanotubes, our client was able to obtain thermoplastic polyurethane with resistance of the order of 106 ohm/sq, allowing the hoses to meet the typical requirements of industrial norms related to electrostatic risks. Additionally, graphene nanotubes’ low working dosages make it possible to maintain the abrasion and chemical resistance, flexibility, and non-marking properties of TPU,” said Dr. Christian Maus, development and support leader for thermoplastics, OCSiAl Group.

The nanotube-modified hoses perfectly meet the demands of heavy-duty operating applications, which frequently require a combination of ESD protection and high abrasion resistance and durability. Based on their excellent performance, these industrial TPU hoses can be widely used in pneumatic and aspiration systems for pumping or transporting materials with high abrasive properties, including abrasive powders, sawdust, chopped paper, construction waste, petroleum products, and crushed or granular materials.

Borealis Demonstrates Commitment to the Highest Sustainability Standards With ISCC PLUS Certification for Ecoplast Site

Borealis Demonstrates Commitment to the Highest Sustainability Standards With ISCC PLUS Certification for Ecoplast Site

  • Ecoplast site becomes the first ISCC PLUS-certified polyolefin mechanical recycler in Austria
  • The certification is evidence of Borealis’ commitment to upholding the highest sustainability standards
  • In the spirit of EverMindsTM, this represents another step by Borealis towards achieving its ambitious circular economy targets

Borealis is pleased to announce that its subsidiary Ecoplast Kunststoffrecycling GmbH, a polyolefin mechanical recycler based in Wildon, Austria, has received the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS). ISCC PLUS is a global certification that covers the entire supply chain, from raw material to final product, guaranteeing compliance with highest standards for ecological and social sustainability, greenhouse gas emissions savings, and traceability. Ecoplast is the first polyolefin mechanical recycler in Austria to gain the certification.

Ecoplast processes around 40,000 tonnes of post-consumer plastic waste from households and industrial consumers every year, turning them into high-quality LDPE and HDPE recyclates, primarily for the plastic film market. It now joins a number of Borealis’ European sites that have received the ISCC PLUS accreditation, including Porvoo (Finland), Schwechat (Austria), Kallo and Beringen (Belgium), Stenungsund (Sweden) and Burghausen (Germany).

A commitment to the highest sustainability standards

The certification represents further progress towards the circular transformation of the plastics industry. With demand for circular plastics steadily growing, it provides Borealis’ customers even more confidence in the traceability of Ecoplast recyclates, supporting them to meet their sustainability targets.

As Chris McArdle, Borealis Vice President Circular Economy Solutions & New Business Development, explains, “The ISCC PLUS certification is a standard that is well-recognised by all stakeholders. With Ecoplast becoming one of the first ISCC PLUS-certified mechanical recyclers in Europe, complementing its already high safety and quality standards, we’re pleased to be able to stay ahead of our customers’ demands for high-performance, sustainabilityassured circular solutions.”

Another step towards closing the loop on plastics waste

Reaffirming Borealis’ position as a market leader in circular plastics solutions, the certification will also support Borealis to meet its own ambitious circular economy goals. Mechanical recycling as carried out at the Ecoplast site is a key component of the circular cascade model, which reflects Borealis’ integrated approach to closing the loop on plastic waste.

By 2025, Borealis targets a six-fold increase in its share of circular products and solutions, or 600 kilotons. By 2030, the volume of circular products and solutions is set to reach 1.8 million tons globally, turning today’s plastic waste into a valuable resource.

Lucrèce Foufopoulos, Borealis Executive Vice President of Polyolefins, Circular Economy Solutions and Innovation & Technology, comments: “Driving progress on plastics circularity is our number one priority. The certification of our asset park is yet another important step to reshape the plastics ecosystem and, jointly with our clients, reinvent essentials for sustainable living.”

XSYS Reflects on a Successful 2022

XSYS Reflects on a Successful 2022

After its first full year as an independent entity, XSYS examines the results of its value proposition for the global flexo prepress community and lifts the veil on what comes next.

Over the past year, the central focus for XSYS has been on bringing more brilliance to the flexographic and letterpress prepress industries that it serves. While 2022 presented a turbulent and challenging climate for all businesses, XSYS continued to reinforce its position as a specialized total solutions provider with best-in-class innovations and value-adding services.

“Our relentless drive to support customers with brilliant products and first-class services that provide them with high-quality printing results certainly paid off in 2022. More than 80 new equipment installations have brought plenty of success stories from across the world, despite the many challenges caused by the severe disruptions in supply chains, the rising cost of materials and energy, and the skills shortages,” said Friedrich von Rechteren, Global Commercial Vice President of XSYS.

Driving innovation in flexo

XSYS’ innovations cover the widest gamut of any provider in this competitive space, from printing plates, plate imaging and processing equipment to sleeves and adapters. The ThermoFlexX portfolio of platemaking equipment and solutions delivers increased automation to customers, such as Kirk Group in Australia, who in 2022 boosted overall operating effectiveness with the installation of a ThermoFlexX imager combined with the full Catena+ line. This end-to-end automated solution, in combination with XSYS plates, drives efficiencies and reduces waste, taking platemaking to the next level.

The XSYS offering of printing plates for all packaging segments is also going from strength to strength. The nyloflex FTM Digital flexo plate, developed recently to facilitate the switch from solvent- to water-based printing, was put into production by Saint André Plastique. The French flexible packaging printer immediately saw an excellent opportunity to take advantage of the plate’s superior built-in flat-top dot technology as it moved an additional part of its production to more sustainable paper-based substrates.

Another innovation that gives converters a competitive edge is the ThermoFlexX Woodpecker surface screening technology, which, in 2022, was further extended with the Nevis edition for printing with white inks on film-based substrates. The new Woodpecker Nevis screening improves overall brilliance and helps converters save on costly white inks while speeding up the imaging process.

Sustainability Mind-set

XSYS also used the year to reinforce its dedication to sustainability by introducing waste-saving products and services and developing more environmentally friendly solutions in collaboration with fellow suppliers. During a live webinar in December, the company was part of a group presenting greener solutions for central impression (CI) flexo operations enabled by next-generation technologies. Further proving thispoint, XSYS Germany GmbH received a silver medal rating in 2022 for its sustainability performance from EcoVadis, rated in the top 10% of manufacturing facilities.

Adding value with services and support

Finding new ways to help customers in their daily lives is another fixed item on the agenda for XSYS. Several new value-adding initiatives were introduced in 2022, including the Flexo Solution Finder – a new online tool for faster troubleshooting and instant access to solutions to common issues in flexo print production. It was developed as part of the XSYS strategy to offer more flexibility and agility for customers, with less downtime and better quality.

To combat supply chain problems, XSYS implemented global solutions across its business to help customers succeed in the face of challenging market conditions. One example was in the US, where the manufacturing capabilities for rotec Sleeves and Adapters in Asheville were expanded, meaning customers are now benefitting from more reliable delivery of high-quality products from the full rotec range.

What’s next?

As we just started 2023, XSYS will continue its quest to support customers locally with innovations, solutions and services that allow them to stay ahead of the game. Over the coming months, new plates and plate processing equipment will come to market, geared towards introducing more flexibility and sustainability in flexo production while also delivering top-quality print at competitive cost levels.

Dagmar Schmidt, CEO of XSYS concluded, “First of all, I would like to thank all our customers across the globe for their trust in XSYS. The past year has proved that XSYS is a company in its own right, with solutions that are enabling customers to remain on a successful trajectory. As we kick off 2023, we look forward to launching new technologies, participating in more collaborations, and meeting the packaging community at trade shows and events. Together we can make 2023 a year of growth.”
