Wireless Charging Unit for EVs Made Possible With Zytel and Zytel HTN Solutions

Wireless Charging Unit for EVs Made Possible With Zytel and Zytel HTN Solutions

As BEVs (battery electric vehicles) take to the road in higher numbers, suppliers forging ahead with wireless charging technologies are turning to flame-retardant Zytel polyamide and Zytel HTN solutions.

Imagine if you could charge your electric vehicle wirelessly, like the way you might use a charging pad to power up your mobile phone. Just by driving the car over a wireless charging pad and parking, your battery could be topped up as you shop or work, while you are underway or at home.

Wireless charging pads are closer to reality than you might think. At K 2022, DuPont Mobility & Materials will display just such an innovative system. It is the result of a successful collaboration with VMAX New Energy, a Tier One supplier to Greater China’s largest wireless charging infrastructure providers.

The VMAX wireless charging system is an 11KW wireless charger for EVs, and it consists of two parts: a vehicle pad that attaches to the car’s chassis, called a receiver, and a pad mounted on the ground, called a transmission plate, that is connected to a power source.

A flame retardant Zytel HTN housing for the transmission plate protects the inner wireless charging system, preventing damage from drops, wheel compression, chemicals, oils, and UV rays. The 30% glass filled PPA material is designated as HTNFR53G30NH.

Collaborating with VMAX, the automotive electrification team at DuPont Mobility & Materials has developed this Zytel HTN grade for high gloss and durability. The critical requirements met by this material include:

  • Surface aesthetics that enable the elimination of paint
  • Surviving a 10kN load rolling test
  • IPX9 waterproof rating
  • Resist damage from stone impact
  • Service temperature range -40 to 120°C
  • Resist degradation from UV and salt
  • Electrical insulation (2kV)
  • FR rating of UL94 V0 at 3 mm
  • Dimensional stability, low warpage

In addition to the transmission plate’s housing, multiple other components in the receiver and transmission plate, including the vehicle-side coil housing and the ground-side coil holder, and are made using Zytel and Zytel HTN.

Wireless charging technology for EVs is in the early stages of development, but is growing in popularity because it:

  • Improves speed and efficiency: Even with a 10-to-12-inch clearance between transmitter and receiver, the systems achieve over 90% efficiency.
  • Removes the need for compatible plugs: There is no need to match the plug on the charging unit with the correct receptacle on the vehicle, which makes these systems much more convenient.
  • Increases safety: Wireless operation avoids the risk of wires and connectors becoming damaged or wearing over time.
  • Saves space: Power and charging components can be embedded underground.

BEVs are expected to be the largest market for these systems. Leading EV manufacturers are already offering wireless charging in some models, and government support is expected to drive demand and implementation of these systems.

Electrified Mobility: DuPont Materials for e-Bikes Bring Sustainable Transportation to Life

Electrified Mobility: DuPont Materials for e-Bikes Bring Sustainable Transportation to Life

An expanded portfolio of material solutions helps remove weight and improve performance in many e-bike components.

Demand for e-bikes has skyrocketed in recent years. Changing demographics, escalating urbanization, and rising interest in outdoor activities have led to a growing demand for sustainability-minded mobility. Many firms and municipalities also now support mobility solutions such as e-bikes to reduce CO 2 emissions from commuters. E-bike riders and manufacturers alike benefit from DuPont Mobility & Materials polymer solutions. The company is translating its expertise in automotive applications to this emerging market with stellar results.

“E-bike manufacturers leverage our experience to achieve goals such as light weighting, parts consolidation, thermal management, chemical resistance, friction reduction, shock reduction, and greater sustainability. It is a fast-growing, fast-moving industry that is ajoy to be involved in,” says Clément Lopez, Application Development Specialist for E-bikes & Robotics at DuPont Mobility & Materials.

In one recent project, designer Didier Biron, founder of Biron-Etudes (Dornes, France), worked with DuPont to build an airless tire concept. Lopez and the team helped to select a specific Hytrel grade (HYT6356) that would provide the correct levels of impact resistance, flex fatigue resistance, high and low temperature performance, and recyclability.

The design incorporates Hytrel flanks on which a rubber tread band is bonded. These flanks were devised as two half shells that could be mounted on standard rims.

Testing by Biron confirmed that the design and material combination could bear the load/ stress and meet the max acceptable (vertical) deformation. Moreover, based on
frontal curb impact tests, the airless tire offers excellent impact resistance.

Biron’s airless tire can significantly reduce maintenance time and cost because it isn’t vulnerable to punctures, and the two-part design enables swift replacement without removing anti-theft screws.

The new airless tire efficiency is 80% that of a conventional tire due to higher rolling resistance. Because it is intended to be used for self-service bike fleets, lower efficiency is acceptable.

E-bike designers and component suppliers rely on the following materials to meet their challenges:

Hytrel TPC-ET: For components requiring excellent flex fatigue, wear, and abrasion resistance, this material is available in VOC-free foamable grades for applications such as saddles, and in rigid grades for components such as airless tires.

Zytel PA: This polyamide reduces weight and replaces metal, while still offering outstanding structural support for frames, rims, forks, pedals, gears, mudguards, and
other electrical and high-temperature applications such as battery enclosures.

Zytel HTN PPA: For structural, ultra-high-temperature applications requiring superior stiffness and stable dimensions, such as batteries and motors, this is the choice. This material is also an excellent electrical insulator.

Zytel LCPA (flexible): Vacuum, pneumatic, and hydraulic components that need excellent thermal, chemical, and hydrolysis resistance are well served by this flexible,
long-chain polyamide.

Crastin PBT: This semi-crystalline polyester powers connectors that need superior flow, halogen-free flame retardancy, hydrolysis resistance, electrical properties, and processability.

Rynite PET: A workhorse polyester, this material has broad applicability for electrical and electronic components such as insulators that need high-temperature resistance.

Clariant Unveils Portfolio for Purifying Pyrolysis Oil Derived From Mixed Plastic Waste

Clariant Unveils Portfolio for Purifying Pyrolysis Oil Derived From Mixed Plastic Waste

  • New HD Max catalysts and Clarit adsorbents are designed for the purification of pyrolysis oil made from mixed plastic waste to achieve cracker compatible feedstock
  • The portfolio answers the need for flexible and economical solutions to remove a wide range of contaminants, regardless of process configuration and plastic waste feedstock
  • Used together, the adsorbents extend the lifetime of the catalyst by reducing impurities

Driven by its vision to enable a circular economy, Clariant launched an innovative portfolio of flexible, custom solutions for the emerging market of chemical plastics recycling.

The new HD Max catalysts and Clarit adsorbents are designed for the purification of pyrolysis oil made from hard-to-recycle mixed plastic waste. Tailored to remove a wide range of contaminants that are continuously changing in the feed, the new products provide the flexibility producers need, regardless of process configuration. Clariant’s solution also includes operational assistance from startup to process optimization, which continues throughout the lifetime of the product.

As a result, producers benefit from highly efficient impurity removal to achieve pyrolysis oil that is compatible with ethylene plants.

Pyrolysis oils are made from a chemical recycling process that breaks polymers down into basic building blocks to be used for new feedstock streams. Since the process helps to reduce the environmental burden created by plastic waste that would otherwise be incinerated or landfilled, it enables a circular value chain for the production of base chemicals.

Jens Cuntze, President of Catalysts at Clariant, said, “The development of more sustainable catalyst technologies is crucial as we support our customers’ move toward a more circular economy with alternative feedstock sources. Our portfolio reflects not only our flexibility and commitment to our customers, but also our pledge to deliver innovation-driven sustainability.”

Nina Karpynec, Head of Marketing, Innovation, and Sustainability, Business Unit Adsorbents & Additives at Clariant, added, “Clariant is well-positioned for the decontamination of pyrolysis oil, drawing upon over 100 years of expertise in the purification of edible oils and of feedstock for renewable fuels. The company has a long history of producing adsorbents for a variety of feedstocks and contaminants, especially with heavy and broad distillation ranges.”

The launch is another milestone for Clariant’s EcoCircle initiative, established throughout the company to support the transition from a one-way plastics value chain toward a circular plastics economy.

Bugaboo, DSM Engineering Materials, Fibrant and Neste Partner to Enable Industry-First Stroller Portfolio Made With Bio-Based Materials

Bugaboo, DSM Engineering Materials, Fibrant and Neste Partner to Enable Industry-First Stroller Portfolio Made With Bio-Based Materials

Today, Bugaboo, DSM Engineering Materials, Fibrant and Neste announce that their cross-value chain partnership has successfully enabled the launch of an entire Bugaboo stroller portfolio made with bio-based materials. Specifically, the majority of the strollers’ plastic parts are made using DSM Engineering Materials’ Akulon 100% bio-based B-MB polyamide 6 (PA6), which in turn is made using bio-based feedstock from both Fibrant and Neste. DSM Engineering Materials uses a mass-balancing approach with renewable waste and residue raw material to enable a ~75% PA6 carbon footprint reduction compared to conventional PA6 and up to 24% of the entire stroller. Experience the Bugaboo donkey stroller on display at DSM Engineering Materials at Hall 6, Booth B11.

Earlier in 2022, Bugaboo announced ambitious targets to achieve net-zero carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 2035. As most of Bugaboo’s impact derives from its Scope 3 emissions, a transition toward lower fossil carbon materials is a key element of the company’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) strategy. This aligns closely with the ambitions of the other partners: DSM Engineering Materials’ ongoing ambition of a full alternative portfolio of bio-based and circular solutions, helping to de-fossilize the economy as part of its SimplyCircular initiative, Fibrant’s commitment to make the entire value chain more sustainable and Neste’s offering of Neste RE feedstock for polymers and chemicals.

While conventional Akulon PA6 is already an excellent-in-class for carbon footprint, switching to Akulon 100% bio-based B-MB PA6 offers a significant carbon footprint reduction compared to conventional PA6 and helps to further de-fossilize the value chain. Used in the entire stroller line, the new material was developed by DSM Engineering Materials in collaboration with its partners Fibrant and Neste. Specifically, Neste provided renewable Neste RE, a feedstock for polymers made 100% from bio-based materials such as waste and residues, which was used to replace fossil feedstock in the value chain. DSM Engineering Materials, Fibrant, and Neste are all ISCC-Plus certified.

With identical mechanical performance and characteristics to conventional Akulon grades, this mass-balanced bio-based Akulon PA6 offers the quality and durability necessary to comply with Bugaboo’s strict safety standards, making it a drop-in substitution while enabling a CO2 reduction of up to 24% per stroller in line with the company’s ambitious ESG targets. This first line of strollers will be gradually available online and in stores worldwide in the coming period. In addition, over the course of 2023, Bugaboo will transition its entire stroller portfolio to production with bio-based materials.

Adriaan Thiery, CEO at Bugaboo, comments: “Tackling the imminent climate crisis and all its consequences requires companies to take responsibility now – but no company can achieve a circular economy alone. By partnering along the value chain, we can benefit from innovative low-carbon emission solutions like bio-based PA6, which enable companies like Bugaboo to achieve our ESG goals, stick to our Paris Agreement targets, and move toward a circular, low-carbon economy.”

Roeland Polet, President DSM Engineering Materials, says: “As Bugaboo becomes one of the earliest pioneers of bio-based PA6, we’re very proud that our collaboration with Fibrant and Neste has produced such an innovative material. Collaboration remains key as we work toward the sustainable economy that consumers know we need, and sustainable circular solutions like our bio-based PA6 are practical ways for our partners to get ahead by realizing their environmental ambitions while making positive impacts at scale. We’re looking forward to supporting many more of our partners as they follow Bugaboo’s example and lead the way toward a more sustainable society.”

Martijn Amory, CEO Fibrant, says: “Acting now is at the core of Fibrants’ commitment to climate neutrality. We are proud that by applying our EcoLactam Bio in this cross-value-chain collaboration, we are enabling a significant and excellent-in-class carbon footprint reduction. This confirms our view that innovation and partnership lead the way to a sustainable future.”

Bugaboo, DSM Engineering Materials, Fibrant and Neste Partner to Enable Industry-First Stroller Portfolio Made With Bio-Based Materials.

Mercedes Alonso, Executive Vice President at Neste Renewable Polymers and Chemicals: “The cooperation with Bugaboo, DSM and Fibrant shows what joint efforts can achieve in our industry: a high quality, yet more sustainable product leading to significant reductions in our industry’s dependence on fossil resources. It shows once more that where there is a will to cooperate, there is change and it also is another example that change is possible in all kinds of industries and applications: Industry-wise, there are no limits when it comes to making polymers more sustainable.”

DSM is looking forward to connecting with its customers and partners at K 2022 to share its exciting new innovations in e-mobility, sustainability, and digitalization. Visitors can find DSM Engineering Materials at Hall 6, Booth B11.

Baerlocher Collaborates With Polyolefin Film Value Chain to Drive Greater Sustainability for Packaging Applications

Baerlocher Collaborates With Polyolefin Film Value Chain to Drive Greater Sustainability for Packaging Applications

Baerlocher, a leading global supplier of plastics additives, is at the forefront of industry efforts to increase the use of recycled plastic in polyolefin film packaging. The company is collaborating with the world’s leading recyclers, converters and brand owners to improve the quality of post-industrial recycled (PIR) and post-consumer recycled (PCR) content used in polyethylene (PE) film. Baerlocher’s Baeropol T-Blends, a family of blended synergistic polymer stabilizers featured here at K 2022 (Hall 5, Stand A21), can help resolve performance and processing inconsistency issues that are typical of PCR and PIR.

Baeropol T-Blends incorporate Baerlocher’s proprietary Resin Stabilization Technology (RST), a family of customizable additive blends that allow for the replacement of traditional antacids. The technology works together with primary and secondary antioxidants to stabilize polyolefin resins far better than standard binary antioxidant blends.

“Collaboration is fundamental in achieving our industry recycling objectives,” said Ed Hall, CEO of Baerlocher USA. “The recycling value chain is amid a collective, iterative process improvement involving new materials, upgrades in equipment, and process optimization. Baerlocher continues to play an important role in these efforts due to our extensive expertise and industry-leading solutions that facilitate the increased use of recycled content without sacrificing quality and performance.”

Brand owners and the entire polyolefin film value chain, including recyclers and converters, are working diligently to meet consumer demands for greater sustainability and comply with regulatory requirements for higher PCR/PIR content loadings in flexible packaging applications. To accomplish this, and subsequently meet their own sustainability objectives, companies must create new packaging designs that incorporate more recycled content – without sacrificing performance in the final product.

Material content reclaimed from distribution centers typically contain a blend of linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) and low-density polyethylene (LDPE) in varying ratios. The value chain is focused on improving collection, washing and sorting of recycled content; removing impurities by melt filtration; and eliminating odors. Baerlocher’s T-Blend stabilization additives can enable recyclers to process the bales using tighter filters to remove impurities without creating new gels at the melt filtration stage.

Enhancing PCR and PIR Resin for Film Through Collaboration

Currently, Baerlocher is engaged in numerous commercial projects with top members of the Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR), such as Little Rock, Arkansas-based recycler, Revolution. Baerlocher’s extensive expertise in the stabilization of PCR content and the use of its Baeropol T-Blends has been instrumental to Revolution during the development phase of new higher-performing PCR resins for film applications.

“Our objective is to supply the market with the highest-quality PCR,” said Tammy Rucker, VP of Sustainability at Revolution. “Baerlocher is actively participating in our efforts to continue improving the consistency and quality of PE PCR, including deepening our understanding of the value of stabilization.”

Additionally, Baerlocher is leading projects with other companies involving the use of their stabilizer additive technology to enable higher-volume, more-consistent and better-quality PIR and PCR resin supply versus conventional antioxidants.

One of these projects, such as with one major post-consumer plastics packaging recycler and flexible packaging solutions provider in the United Kingdom (UK), have resulted in new commercial product development that has led to the company exceeding the UK’s new 30 percent PCR content law. This new law mandates that companies will need to pay a plastic packaging tax if you have manufactured or imported plastic packaging components which contain less than 30 percent recycled plastic.

Another project is with Cascades Flexible Packaging, a division of Cascades Canada ULC, which manufactures flexible plastic packaging products. Baerlocher Baeropol technology is allowing Cascades Flexible Packaging to achieve higher-quality recycled content and increase its use in film applications.

“As a pioneer in promoting the circular economy, Cascades Flexible Packaging is committed to developing films with a high percentage of recycled content (50-100 percent) that allow us to improve our carbon footprint and provide a higher level of quality to our customers,” said Fabricio Smillo, technical manager of Cascade Flexible Packaging. “We are collaborating closely with the Baerlocher team and utilizing T-Blends, based on the company’s Resin Stabilization Technology, to increase the oxidative induction time (OIT), melt stability and physical characteristics of various PCR/PIR resin sources. Baerlocher has been an excellent partner, bringing the technology, resources and expertise we need to pursue our goal of contributing to the circular economy.”

XSYS Announces Price Increases Across ThermoFlexX Prepress Portfolio

XSYS Announces Price Increases Across ThermoFlexX Prepress Portfolio

XSYS has informed its customers today of a price increase on all ThermoFlexX products and spare parts. This decision has been a direct consequence of the critical global economic situation which continues to drive-up costs for the XSYS prepress equipment division.

While raw materials, energy and other input costs already rose between 10% and 20% throughout 2021, double-digit percentage inflation has continued in 2022, further compounding the financial pressures on the sector. More specifically, the following areas are severely affecting XSYS:

  • Steel and plastics: Supply shortages are still present and pricing is inflated accordingly in order to secure suitable quality materials.
  • Electronics: Global shortages of parts and supply chain issues have continued into 2022.
  • Energy: Volatile gas and electricity prices are affecting production costs and raw materials, with no let-up in sight.
  • Logistics: All routes, but particularly sea freight, remain affected. The pricing is consistently higher than 2021 and subject to various surcharges.

“We have been working very hard to mitigate these huge pressures by implementing numerous efficiency improvements, qualifying alternative suppliers, and enforcing aggressive cost control measures. Unfortunately, the extraordinary and persistent inflation levels now leave us no other option than to proceed with the implementation of these price increases,” said Friedrich von Rechteren, Global Commercial VP at XSYS.

The increases comprise 10% across ThermoFlexX imagers and ThermoFlexX Catena equipment, while spare parts and service agreements will see a 20% rise, as they have been excluded from previous increases. All increases will be effective starting 27th October 2022.

“We certainly understand that higher prices will add to the already difficult situation for our customers, but given the current market conditions we have little choice but to pass on a portion of these significant increases in order to secure an uninterrupted and reliable supply of XSYS equipment,” he concluded.

Together Against Climate Change – With Circular Plastics

Together Against Climate Change – With Circular Plastics

  • Focus on circular economy and resource conservation
  • Covestro helps customers achieve their sustainability goals
  • “Crafting Connections With You”

The world’s leading plastics trade show K 2022 is all about using plastics to protect the climate, nature and resources. Covestro will present new products and materials there for many key areas that support the circular economy and climate neutrality. Under the motto “Crafting Connections With You”, the booth will become a workshop where the company invites customers, partners and other stakeholders to work together on concepts to overcome major long-term challenges.

“Plastics are a must to drive the shared global vision of the circular economy and achieve climate neutrality. At K 2022, we want to highlight the huge potential of these advanced materials to solve global challenges and showcase promising developments,” says CEO Dr. Markus Steilemann. “The show will also play an important role in bringing together partners in the value chains and from other sectors. The task now is to move forward together with rapid, major steps toward implementation.”

Sucheta Govil, Chief Commercial Officer, adds: “We have set ourselves ambitious targets and want to become carbon neutral by 2035 for CO2 emissions from our operations and renewable energy supply, so that our customers can achieve their climate and sustainability goals. To achieve this, we are relying on close cooperations with them and many other partners,” says Govil. “At the show, we will be showcasing innovative products and solutions from the fields of alternative raw materials, innovative recycling and renewable energies that pave the way to full circularity at Covestro.”

Covestro will use K 2022 from October 19-26 for a multimedia appearance to network: At the booth, an exciting program of talks will be streamed live throughout in the “Talk Arena” with prominent guests. The Backstage area is a multifunctional space for hybrid events and interactive formats. An extensive digital platform – called “Space” – provides a lot of background information about the developments shown. Innovators and their developments for the circular economy are presented as part of the video series “Meet The Innovators”.

Crafting Circular Economy

In this important area, Covestro shows how it is driving the transformation to a circular economy and aims to achieve climate neutrality in its own production and in its supply of renewable energy. With the introduction of the “CQ” label for products based on alternative raw materials, Covestro aims to create greater transparency and make it easier for customers to distinguish them from conventional, fossil-based products.

Another focus is on innovative recycling technologies. The “Recycling Technology Wheel” provides information on current developments. Chemolysis in particular holds great potential for the quantitative recovery of raw materials. Covestro is now introducing the name “Evocycle CQ” for all evolutionary recycling processes as an extension.

Crafting Electrification

The shift from fossil to renewable energy sources is also linked to electrification of the important sectors of transport and buildings: The mobile and stationary future is electric. Plastics from Covestro will play an important role in all of these in the future – from power generation and storage to use in vehicles and at home.

Renewable energy also plays a role in a special exhibit: The “Photon,” a prototype solar race car, is on display in the outdoor area of Hall 7A. This “Sonnenwagen” was designed and built by a dedicated team of students from Aachen, Germany, who have set themselves the task of developing and racing high-tech vehicles for a particularly sustainable form of mobility. Covestro is the main sponsor of the project.

Crafting Smart Designs

This exhibition area is dedicated to the possibilities of digitalization and open innovation approaches to work in a more connected and sustainable way along the entire value chain.

At K 2022, Covestro will present, among other things, new charging stations and wall charging stations (wallboxes) for future mobility, including the first wallbox produced by partner EVBox using more sustainable polycarbonates. These plastics from the Makrolon RE range are produced proportionately from biowaste and residual materials, in part using renewable electricity, and therefore have a very low carbon footprint.

Crafting Sustainable Living

How can urban spaces be made more sustainable without compromising on consumer preferences? Covestro provides answers to this question in this exhibition area. The aims of the developments presented are greater comfort and design freedom, enhanced functionality, more sustainable and circular solutions, and energy-efficient living.

Covestro and Arcesso Dynamics, a custom polyurethane parts manufacturer, will introduce Arfinio at K 2022, a breakthrough manufacturing solution for furniture, bathroom fixtures, electronic parts, housings and other applications based on reaction injection molding (RIM) of aliphatic polyurethanes.

All journalists are cordially invited to visit Covestro’s booth A 75 in Hall 6. There you will have the opportunity to talk about the innovations and topics on display, and you can obtain the Covestro press kit for K 2022. If you wish, we will also be happy to give you a tour of the booth or arrange interviews.
