Bull’s Eye: Customers Thrilled with Milestone Machine

Bull’s Eye: Customers Thrilled with Milestone Machine

  • Survey on the occasion of the 2023 Anniversary Days: Hybrid Allrounder 470 H meets customer requirements
  • Success story: 96 per cent of respondents rate milestone machine as extremely attractive
  • New machine technology: A sought-after alternative to hydraulic and electric injection moulding machines

To mark the anniversary of “100 years of the Hehl family company”, the hybrid Allrounder 470 H with its fascinating machine technology celebrated its premiere. In a representative survey conducted at the Anniversary Days in March 2023, 96 per cent of more than 300 respondents rated the new machine as extremely attractive. This demonstrates that the milestone machine has the potential to become a success story.

Whichever responses you look at, all the statements about the new 470 H hybrid Allrounders are very positive. Gerhard Böhm, Managing Director Sales and Service at Arburg, puts it in a nutshell: “Our plans with this interesting machine technology were clearly confirmed by the visitors to the Anniversary Days, showing that we have succeeded in tapping into contemporary trends and concerns. What we are offering people with our milestone machine is exactly what they want and need in their production. The hybrid Allrounder 470 H machines save energy, conserve resources, and are efficient in production, user-friendly and reliable at the same time. This generates a high level of acceptance among our users. And again, that’s exactly what we intended.”

Energy and production-efficient hybrid machine

Compared to a similar hydraulic machine, the energy footprint of the new Allrounder 470 H is up to 50 per cent better, and depending on the application, up to 12,000 kilograms of CO2 can be saved each year. The new oil management concept helps further conserve resources, as it requires around 35 per cent less oil. Machine waste heat is used to preheat the oil. In addition, the required cooling water capacity is also between 50 and 70 per cent lower. This is supplemented by flow splitting for simultaneous movements of hydraulic secondary axes and the extended use of the Arburg servo hydraulic system. A reduction in the dry cycle time of up to 33 per cent results in significantly greater production efficiency.

The most important results of the survey

The fact that the vast majority of respondents see the new hybrid machines as the perfect alternative to hydraulic and also electric injection moulding machines is confirmed impressively by the outstanding survey results. For 96 per cent, the new Allrounder 470 H machines are a suitable replacement for hydraulic machines, while 95 per cent see them as a suitable replacement for electric machines. 96 per cent of respondents consider the anniversary Allrounders to be attractive machines. No less than 85 per cent of them were immediately convinced that the new hybrid Allrounders would suit their respective operational application spectrum, and 92 per cent agreed that the price/performance ratio was very good. Whether the Allrounder 470 H was also interesting for their companies was spontaneously answered by 83 per cent with “Yes”.

The combination does the trick

In detailed discussions with many customers during the Anniversary Days in Lossburg, Gerhard Böhm learned about another important criterion for the successful launch of the milestone machines: “On the one hand, the combination of electric clamping unit and hydraulic injection unit significantly reduces the acquisition and operating costs as well as the carbon footprint; on the other hand, most users are already familiar with the hydraulic injection unit and also feel comfortable with it.” In addition, the practical grading in the performance variants “Comfort”, “Premium” and “Ultimate”, as well as the different sizes of the injection units and the numerous options available allow the new Allrounder 470 H to be precisely adapted to the respective customer requirements. As Gerhard Böhm summarises: “The market is currently demanding precisely the technology that we can offer with our new hybrid Allrounders. This means that we can look to the future with optimism.” The milestone machine marks the start of a completely new generation of machines from Arburg – particularly interesting for customers who are looking for an energy-saving and economical alternative to hydraulic or electric machines, but at the same time want to benefit from the proven advantages of both worlds.

ARBURGadditive: Large Freeformer 750-3X, 3D Printing of LSR and Services

ARBURGadditive: Large Freeformer 750-3X, 3D Printing of LSR and Services

  • Industrial additive manufacturing: Large Freeformer 750-3X from Arburg processes standard granules
  • 3D printing with LSR: LiQ 5 from innovatiQ additively manufactures components from liquid silicone
  • Partnership: Arburg expands its range of additive manufacturing services with t-exact

ARBURGadditive will be presenting its range of products and services for additive manufacturing at Stand 2-301 at the Rapid.Tech 3D trade fair and specialist AM congress from 9 to 11 May 2023 in Erfurt, Germany. The new large Freeformer 750-3X, which processes original plastic granules, and the LiQ 5 for 3D printing liquid silicone (LSR) will be on show. ARBURGadditive will also be providing information on additive manufacturing services alongside its partner t-exact.

“With our freeformers from Arburg and 3D printers from innovatiQ, we offer a broad spectrum for industrial additive manufacturing,” says Dr Victor Roman, Managing Director of ARBURGadditive. “The highlight of the trade fair is the large Freeformer 750-3X, which uses Arburg Plastic Freeforming to additively process the same original granules as in injection moulding, and does so even faster and more economically than before. And innovatiQ has invented liquid additive manufacturing for 3D printing with liquid silicone. Both technologies are unique on the market.”

Freeformer 750-3X – fast, accurate and economical

The latest and largest Arburg machine for additive manufacturing will be on display at Rapid.Tech 2023: the Freeformer 750-3X. At 750 square centimetres, its build chamber is around 2.5 times larger than that of the Freeformer 300-3X – with the same external dimensions. This enables it to produce larger functional components or to additively manufacture small batches industrially, including from soft materials and in hard/soft combinations.

Arburg Plastic Freeforming (APF) with the freeformer is an open system that can handle a wide range of materials. This means that users can control the process themselves and can specifically adjust and optimise layer separation, droplet size and parameters. In addition, data processing and the Gestica controller developed and manufactured by Arburg itself have been further optimised in terms of process stability, component quality and build time. The result is significantly reduced costs per component. The freeformer is also the right solution for complex geometries, integrated functions and work in clean rooms.

3D printing of components from standard silicone (LSR)

The second exhibit is a LiQ5 for LSR processing. Thanks to its actively heatable build chamber, this 3D printer from innovatiQ is taking LAM (liquid additive manufacturing) technology another step forward in its development. This means that components for orthopaedics or technical seals, for example, can now be printed with even greater process reliability. And all of that in injection moulding quality, but without the use of an expensive tool.

The product portfolio of innovatiQ also includes the TiQ series, which process plastic filaments using FFF (fused filament fabrication) technology. The 3D printing systems from innovatiQ are likewise based on an open material platform.

Arburg offers AM services with partners

The Arburg experts offer a wealth of expertise on all aspects of industrial additive manufacturing. To demonstrate its associated range of services, Arburg will be joined at its stand this time by partner t-exact from Steinbach-Hallenberg (Thuringia), who will be presenting its services in the areas of additive manufacturing, 3D analysis using computed tomography, and coordinate and profile measurements. At the Arburg stand, numerous components used in industries such as automotive, aerospace and medical technology will also be available to visitors as hands-on displays.

The new Freeformer 750-3X has three discharge units and a significantly enlarged build chamber measuring 330 millimetres x 230 millimetres x 230 millimetres.

Asahi Kasei Establishes Framework for Investment in Startups Focused on Carbon Neutrality

Asahi Kasei Establishes Framework for Investment in Startups Focused on Carbon Neutrality

Asahi Kasei established a “Care for Earth” investment framework as a new initiative for carbon neutrality by investing $100 million worldwide in early-stage startups that aim to solve issues in environmental fields such as hydrogen, energy storage, carbon management, and bio-based chemicals over the 5-year period up to fiscal year 2027.

Since 2008, Asahi Kasei has advanced corporate venture capital (CVC) activities in order to create new businesses by investing in startups and performing joint developments with them. Based in Silicon Valley since 2011, this activity has facilitated investments in over 50 startups in the US, Europe, China, and Japan, resulting in numerous collaborations and the two acquisitions of Crysal IS, a US-based provider of UVC LEDs for air, water and surface disinfection, and Swedish Senseair, a manufacturer of CO2 and alcohol sensing solutions.

Asahi Kasei is helping to solve issues in society with all of its businesses providing value from the perspectives of “Care for People” to realize active life in the new normal and “Care for Earth” to realize a carbon neutral and sustainable world.

Until now, Asahi Kasei has focused its CVC investments in the area of “Care for People” such as healthcare, IoT, and homes, which have relatively short timeframes to commercialization. The area of “Care for Earth,” in contrast, tends to have longer-term commercial prospects, while fields such as hydrogen and energy storage lack established value chains, making it difficult to invest under the conventional framework.

“Our CVC team is excited for the opportunity to accelerate investments in early-stage startups hard at work to make a difference for our planet,” said Dr. Takashi Morishita, General Manager of Corporate Venture Capital at Asahi Kasei. “We are seeing a lot of passionate people leading these decarbonization initiatives and it feels good to help them on their way. The ideas and technology being innovated now will be an invaluable asset in actualizing a carbon neutral society.”

To achieve carbon neutrality in 2050, Asahi Kasei aims to reduce its own GHG emissions and to contribute to reducing GHG emissions throughout society, while creating new businesses through the newly established “Care for Earth” investment framework whose investment horizons and investment decision criteria are different than before. The new investment framework is also expected to help Asahi Kasei advance the transformation of its Material sector portfolio through participation in business
ecosystems for carbon neutrality.

The Asahi Kasei Group aims to further contribute to sustainable society while achieving sustainable growth of corporate value by leveraging its accumulated technologies and expertise while accelerating investment for Green Transformation (GX).

Light, Modular, Intelligent: Sacmi Metal Vision Systems in the Spotlight at Metpack

Light, Modular, Intelligent: Sacmi Metal Vision Systems in the Spotlight at Metpack

A comprehensive presentation of the various ‘vision cells’, each dedicated to a specific product line, with a wealth of technological innovations to streamline management and broaden the field of application. A first for the fair: integration between SACMI DMD digital printing and the ECLIPSIM DECO metal sheet vision system

Building synergies to stay ahead of market developments is what SACMI is all about: hence our presentation, at Metpack 2023 (Messe Essen, 2-6 May), of the latest range of metal packaging vision systems.

A fresh design philosophy built around customer needs focuses on modularity, space savings and effective systems operation. In parallel, SACMI delivers increasingly accurate controls, with dedicated systems for each specific product.

Integrating digital printing with vision inspection

Key developments on show at the fair include the first solution on the market to integrate both production and quality control of digitally decorated metal sheets.

  • SACMI DMD is the digital alternative for decorating the metal sheets used to make packaging in food, beverage and other industries. Why go digital? Traditionally screen-printed, decoration is a vital packaging component as it enhances product quality and brand recognizability. Hence the need for ever-increasing customization which, in turn, has led to generally smaller batches, consequently reducing the efficiency of traditional decoration lines (high-speed systems that can produce more than 7,000 sheets per hour but are too rigid when small batches and fast changeovers are required). DMD is revolutionary in two ways, Firstly, it can decorate at rates as high as 2,500 sheets/hour). Secondly, it releases decoration from the rigidity of conventional systems (size changeover times slashed, no excess stock).
  • Now available with heads offering resolutions as high as 600 dpi, SACMI proposes a DMD that is – for the very first time – integrated with the ECLIPSIM DECO vision system. The advantages? Primarily, with SACMI, manufacturers can count on a sole provider who guarantees quality, reliability and worldwide assistance. Secondly, this pairing lays the foundations for ‘smart’ line management, which begins with the customer’s order placement and continues with proactive (and, in the future, retroactive) control of any production drifts.

Intelligent, light, dedicated: the complete range of SACMI vision systems for metal

SACMI provides the market’s most comprehensive range of metal packaging inspection systems. That means coated, lithographed sheets yet also caps, lids, containers and cans. All these systems share the latest-generation CVS (Computer Vision Software) and patented solutions (Chrometriq and ElioScan) that deliver the best reliability in the metal inspection field.

  • Modular and flexible, fast and precise: SACMI has now enhanced all its systems in terms of both technology and scope. The up-to-the-minute systems on show at the fair feature several innovations such as the lighter, more compact architecture of the electrical panel. SACMI also presents MetalSight, the new all-in-one platform that summarizes the SACMI approach to vision systems for metal… an approach that begins with the customers’ needs. Metpack visitors will have a unique opportunity to see a range of inspection cells, each dedicated to a specific product line.
  • And that’s not all. These systems are increasingly used on production lines and SACMI now takes things to the next level on the ‘control’ side with a new operator interface. Called Classy-AI, it features advanced artificial intelligence algorithms that classify defects and generate warnings and statistics in real time. This means operators can run the systems, even if they’re not vision system experts, with a valuable helping hand from an interactive dashboard.

SACMI at Chinaplas 2023: Raw Material and Energy Savings, ‘Smart Vision’ Inspection

SACMI at Chinaplas 2023: Raw Material and Energy Savings, ‘Smart Vision’ Inspection

SACMI presents new technological developments for the CCM that deliver even greater energy savings and more advanced controls. Alongside them, an inspection revolution with dedicated systems that SACMI, as of now, also produces directly in China. And from SACMI Laboratory, a ready-to-market solution for a streamlined, profitable transition to new lightweight neck standards

With more than 680 CCM presses installed, SACMI leads the way on China’s capping line market. Now, in the run-up to the 35th edition of Chinaplas, a key event that draws visitors from every corner of the globe, SACMI is getting ready to showcase multiple innovations on the latest-generation CCM presses.

The press range now benefits from an integrated range of ‘smart vision’ inspection systems, from the CHS (for caps), produced directly in China as of this year, to the PVS (for preforms), which can be incorporated on the next-gen IPS 300 and IPS 400.

It’s not just technology that’s on show. Visitors to the SACMI stand (n. 10H41) can also see several Laboratory-made products, such as market-ready neck+cap and tethered-friendly solutions designed to aid the lightweighting transition: solutions already adopted by some of the industry’s major players.

SACMI CCM, clever inside

More stylish outside, more digital and technological inside than ever: at Chinaplas 2023 SACMI will be showcasing the latest CCM machines, equipped with the brand new CM-Flow extruder.

  • Energy savings of up to 9%
  • Up to 50% fewer black specks compared to the same resin processed with traditional extruders.
  • CMFLOW produces caps that have the same resistance to stress cracking as
those produced with traditional extrusion technology and operates at lower temperatures.

CMFLOW isn’t just highly effective. It’s also simple and compact. This allow for quick and easy maintenance because, unlike a conventional extruder, the motor is coupled directly to the screw without any need for a gearmotor.

CMFLOW is as-standard on the new SACMI CCM48SD presses yet can also be implemented on the CCM24SF and CCM32MC versions.

SACMI CCM, digital inside

All latest-generation CCMs – and existing versions such as the CCM24SF, CCM32MC, CCM48SD and CCM64MC – can be equipped with SACMI Smart Pack. A digital control package that integrates advanced sensors and on-board controls, Smart Pack simplifies operation, increases machine availability and reduces the risk of errors or line stoppages.

How? Through, for example, an automatic system that verifies correct dose insertion and positioning. Through automatic (and predictive) hydraulic oil quality control. Through cutting-edge thermoregulation to prevent on-mold condensation, thus boosting system availability and extending machine and mold component lifespans while improving the quality of the molding process.

Smart vision: SACMI CHS (and beyond)

To provide customers with ever-closer support, SACMI has begun producing its CHS cap inspection vision system range at one of its Chinese plants. The goal: to further accelerate delivery times and punctuality of service.

But that’s not all. The idea is to offer the market a revolutionary approach that is already as-standard at SACMI: inspection is no longer simply about controlling individual defects/caps, it’s a tool to gather valuable information to improve processes and predict drifts.

Key innovations include a patented SACMI solution that inspects tamper band slitting on the new tethered caps. The tethered standard is also of growing interest in China and SACMI offers a range of advantageous ready-to-use solutions, such as simple slitting of the tamper band in post processing.

GME30.40 neck transition, fully integrated cap-preform production with a new generation of SACMI IPS machines

SACMI aims to help manufacturers transition to new lightweight standards. To do so, it also works alongside key international certification bodies like CETIE. For example, the new GME30.40 ‘multi-purpose’ 26/22 neck standard is gaining popularity in China and around the world as it offers a tethered-compatible solution that delivers net plastic savings of more than 30% without affecting performance.

Through SACMI Lab, each development is accompanied by a series of dedicated, customized, ready-to-use caps. Some of these will be showcased on the SACMI stand to illustrate their outstanding versatility, as they can all be customized to meet production requirements.

The entire process is streamlined by SACMI’s ability to provide comprehensive technology, which spans from CCM presses to the latest-generation IPS preform presses. The IPS 300 and 400 are, in fact, the first solutions on the market to integrate, directly on the press, intensive preform inspection with the PVS 156 vision system. This reduces the risk of incorrect batches and makes settings and changeovers easier.

To sum up, the SACMI CCM+IPS combination means customers can count on a sole provider at each stage of the process, allowing them to accelerate the adoption of new standards and develop distinctive products that meet the strict specifications of the main international brand owners.

Interpack 2023 – The Countdown is on!

Interpack 2023 – The Countdown is on!

‘We are ready’, says Thomas Dohse, Director of interpack. ‘All our exhibitors and partners are ready to go and we look forward to providing the industry with another great trade fair.’ interpack is an important building block in the innovation cycle of the packaging and related process industries. After a six-year break, numerous innovations for all user areas will be on display: Food, beverages, confectionery and bakery products, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, non-food and industrial goods. Because requirements and framework conditions are constantly changing, the focus is on digital technologies and sustainable products and processes. ‘We notice very clearly the great determination of the industry to actively shape this transformation process’, Dohse continues. From 4 to 10 May, visitors can therefore expect numerous débuts in the 18 fully booked exhibition halls and fascinating solutions from the world of packaging.

Companies from all over the world

From Europe to Asia, from Africa to America to Australia: Exhibitors at interpack 2023 come from all five continents. In total, over 60 countries will be represented. This makes interpack the best place to meet potential partners and customers and to expand international business. The top exhibiting nations are Germany, Italy, China, Turkey, India, the Netherlands, the USA, France, Spain, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The largest areas are occupied by key players such as IMA Industria Macchine, Coesia Group, Syntegon Technology, Marchesini Group, Sollich, Duravant, Aasted ApS, MULTIVAC, OPTIMA packaging group and Ishida Europe Limited. A total of over 2,700 exhibitors are taking part.

Record number of exhibitors from the packaging sector

With over 1,000 exhibitors, the packaging sector at interpack is a mega trade fair in its own right. Never before have so many companies showcased their products in Halls 7 and 7a, 8a, 9 and 10 with a focus on packaging materials, packaging supplies and packaging aids. All common materials and products of the packaging market will be presented here. As a cross-sectional area for all visitor target groups, these halls and storeys, six in total, are of central importance and reflect the innovative strength of the industry with numerous unveilings of new products. A lot is happening, especially with sustainable materials and renewable raw materials. For example, bioplastics that are biodegradable or biobased, such as those made from sugar cane, palm leaves or corn, can be seen at the trade fair.

Furthermore, especially in Halls 8a and 9, in addition to solutions made of paper, cardboard and paperboard, there will be new, sustainable materials in numerous variants with a focus on sustainability. Plastic packaging, which has the largest share of the market, is still gf great importance, especially for product safety and shelf life. Here, too, there are new approaches towards a circular economy, for example with recyclable films, monomaterial solutions and the use of recyclates or reusable packaging. And the increasing digitalisation of the industry is also leading to new developments in the packaging sector. Some examples for this are digital labels, smart packaging and packaging with QR codes.

Four hot topics illustrate the trends

The developments in the packaging sector illustrate which issues are at the forefront for the processing and packaging industry and its customers as a whole. Megatrends such as sustainability and digitalisation, numerous economic and ecological, but also political and social changes and challenges are of concern for companies and provide a boost to innovation at this year’s interpack.

The circular economy will be a top issue: It seems to be a simple model, but is also all-encompassing and poses major challenges in many areas. In the age of climate change, the important thing is to produce as little unrecyclable waste as possible. Hand in hand with this goes the need to conserve resources. Therefore, interpack will showcase sustainable processing and packaging solutions as well as digital services that help to make production processes efficient and sustainable. For example, the focus is on reducing the carbon footprint of packaging throughout the value chain, improving energy efficiency and the increasing importance of reusable materials, which will help the industry to make optimal use of resources.

When it comes to transformation processes, little can be done without digital technologies. Big data, augmented reality and remote machine maintenance have long since found their way into assembly shops and machine fleets. For example, the Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging will be providing information on digital training systems based on virtual reality in the VDMA Technology Lounge in Hall 4. And technologies such as Holy Grail 2.0, RFID, NFC or augmented reality will also increase in the future.

The fourth hot topic at interpack is product safety, one of the core tasks of packaging. The industry is already making an important contribution to reducing food waste. Digital technologies are key in this regard.

Inspiration from new specials

The exhibition programme is complemented by numerous specials such as the Spotlight talks & trends lecture forum with seven theme days, the interpack Start-up Zone, the Co-Packing joint booth, several award ceremonies with exciting packaging innovations, the SAVE FOOD Highlight Route with new approaches in the fight against global food loss and waste and the promotion of women at Women in Packaging and Late Night during the day in the Tightly Packed TV studio.

‘Every part counts’ is the motto of the components event, which will once again be held parallel to interpack in Hall 18. Here, machine parts and accessories, automation systems and components for packaging materials are presented on around 2,400 square metres. The approximately 80 exhibitors support companies in the packaging sector and the related process industry in achieving goals such as increasing efficiency, saving resources or digitalisation.

Effective networking: Live and digital

Finding the right match for your own business is made possible by interpack Matchmaking. The dating platform for business connects exhibitors with visitors before, during and after the event. In this way, you can best exploit your trade fair visit’s potential. The online matchmaking tool suggests potential contacts who match the respective interests to its users. This saves time as well as increasing your own reach.
