FKM and AM Solutions Initiate Close Cooperation

FKM Additive Manufacturing and AM Solutions – 3D post processing technology are now working together to optimize the SLS printing process. Particularly with regard to series production, the goal is to solve the conflict between high quality and cost-effectiveness with various intelligent post-processing solutions, both now and in the future.

FKM Additive Manufacturing, headquartered in Bieden kopf, Germany, provides high-quality 3D printed products on an industrial scale to customers around the world and is a technology leader in industrial powder bed laser melting. Recently, FKM became one of the first German additive manufacturing companies to meet the stringent requirements of IATF 16949, qualifying it as a supplier of production parts to the international automotive industry.

The starting point of the partnership is the purchase of an S2 system from AM
Solutions, which is used to finish plastic parts produced using the powder bed technology
fully automatically and in a continuous process with reproducible results at the highest
quality level.

Automation and streamlining of the process chain:
With demand for optimized quality and high output, it is important for the company to continually optimize its own processes and be well equipped for the future. & When it comes to series production, two factors play a decisive role for us: quality and cost-effectiveness. We have identified post-processing as a very important lever  explains Matthias Henkel, Managing Director of FKM. & At the last Form NeXT, we began discussions with AM Solutions, explored joint possibilities and finally came to the conclusion that AM Solutions, with all its experience and expertise, is the right partner for us to achieve these goals and further expand our leading market position”. & As part of the Rösler Group, we have decades of mechanical engineering know-how and experience. This enables us to deliver equipment that solves real problems – from industry for industry& , says Tobias Schamberger, Head of Sales AM Solutions – 3D post processing technology. For FKM, we are taking a close look at the various challenges and working together to develop solutions based on systems from our broad portfolio. At the same time, we have the perfect sparring partner to test and validate our developments”.

Purchase of an S2 as starting point:
FKM’s purchase of an S2 system from AM Solutions marks the beginning of the partnership. It will be used to fully automate the post-processing of powder-bed plastic parts in a continuous process with reproducible results at the highest quality level. By investing in an S2, and the resulting further automation of our processes, we will be able to guarantee our customers the best quality in the future. It also helps us to prepare the company for expected external factors, such as the looming shortage of skilled workers, and to streamline process chains  says Matthias Henkel. Thanks to the S2 unique machine concept, which enables high part throughput, the post-processing of several printers can be centralized. A special loop belt ensures gentle transport of the parts through the machine, resulting in the best cleaning results with homogeneous surfaces. The integrated blast media preparation system ensures consistent blast media quality for absolutely reproducible processing results.

FKM Sintertechnik GmbH becomes beta partner for AM Solutions’ new C2, which enables chemical smoothing and coloring of AM plastic parts in just one process step (2-in-1 principle).

Beta partnership for C2 and other projects in the pipeline:
In addition to investing in an S2, in 2024, FKM will also become a beta partner for the new C2 system. The C2, which AM Solutions will showcase at this year Form next, combines chemical smoothing and coloring of polymers in a single operation and is more environmentally friendly than comparable systems thanks to newly developed process media. It is based on the unique 2-in-1 principle from AM Solutions and reproduces two process steps in just one system. & At FKM, we are always striving to open up new possibilities for our customers& components. AM Solutions& unique approach convinced us to participate in the C2 beta program and thus further expand our partnership  explains Matthias Henkel. In addition, both companies are in close contact to address the topic of automated depowering in the SLS area in the future.

Optimally expandable polypropylene for sustainable applications

Ultrapolymers has expanded its polyolefins portfolio with the expandable PP grade Moplen EP490H. Developed by LyondellBasell as a special basic type for foamed applications, it allows a reduction in the use of materials and thus the CO 2 footprint in a wide range of applications. In addition, the very good mechanical properties enable mono-material solutions that can be reused or fed directly into the polyolefin recycling cycle after use. This heterophasic copolymer, which offers many properties that were previously only achievable with expandable polystyrene, proves to be an optimal choice in terms of sustainable packaging.

The main applications of Moplen EP490H are extruded foamed films, profiles and sheets, thermoforming and extrusion blow molding, for example rigid packaging for food and consumer goods. The material combines higher foamability than any conventional polypropylene with good rigidity, high impact strength at room and low temperatures, good dimensional stability as well as very good resistance to creep and good resilience.
With its very good deep-drawing properties, Moplen EP490H offers the packaging industry expanded options for developing lightweight, material-saving and therefore environmentally friendly mono-material solutions. Thanks to the good thermal insulation and temperature resistance as well as the high water and chemical resistance, containers for hot meals and drinks are also among the possible applications. The fine and evenly distributed cell structure results in a significantly smoother surface with significantly better aesthetics than when using conventional polypropylene. Due to their high dimensional stability and durability, corresponding products offer an attractive, reusable alternative to expandable polystyrene. The possibility of manufacturing from ISCC PLUS-certified raw materials and the good suitability for recycling make further contributions to greater sustainability.
Moplen EP490H is manufactured with a phthalate-free catalyst, is plasticizer and BPA-free and has the relevant food regulatory approvals. Ultrapolymers supplies the complete PP formulation including the endothermic blowing agent Polybatch BA 9090 and the nucleating agent Polybatch CFPP 0260 NU.
Business Development Manager Hermann Diem says: “With the new Moplen EP490H, we can now offer a material that, thanks to its good foamability, enables particularly sustainable solutions in the area of lightweight packaging. Based on our decades of experience with polyolefins, our customers also receive comprehensive application technology advice from molding design to product-specific recipe creation and tool design to starting the production process.”

Asahi Kasei to Present Diversified Material Solutions for EV Batteries and Circular Economy at Fakuma 2023

Asahi Kasei to present diversified material solutions for EV batteries and circular economy at Fakuma 2023

Japanese technology company Asahi Kasei will showcase diversified material solutions for safe and compact EV batteries, improved connectivity and lightweighting, as well as circular economy at Fakuma, the world’s leading trade event for industrial plastics processing, from 17 – 21 October 2023 in Friedrichshafen, Germany.

Thermoplastic composites for EV battery applications

This year, Asahi Kasei will put a special focus on its broad range of materials for lightweight, compact, and safe electric vehicle battery solutions. The company is currently developing a new continuous glass fiber reinforced thermoplastic, LENCEN, and will present it for the first time at the European trade show Fakuma. This composite material is formed by stacking layers of continuous glass fiber textiles with polyamide 66 (PA66) films. Due to its tensile strength, high heat resistance, and impact properties similar to metal, this material improves collision safety and weight reduction of EV batteries.

In addition, the company will showcase a carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastic unidirectional tape (CFRTP-UD tape) that utilizes both recycled continuous carbon fiber and the company’s LEONA polyamide resin. Boasting a higher strength than metal, this CFRTP-UD tape can be applied to automobile frames and bodies, further enabling the recycling of end-of-vehicle-life parts into different, new automobile parts.

Asahi Kasei will also showcase cooling pipes for EV battery packs made of the modified polyphenylene ether (m-PPE) XYRON, as well as 2170 cell trays based on the m-PPE particle foam SunForce.

Solutions for improved HMI and glass replacement

AZP is a transparent polymer that overcomes the disadvantages of conventional optical plastic materials. Featuring a close-to-zero birefringence equivalent to glass as well as a superior designability, this material allows high transmittance and low color distortions at all viewing angles. Clear images without luminance variations, color distortion and blurring can be achieved in polarized optical equipment such as AR/VR headsets and head-up-displays (HUDs). The premium quality appearance is also maintained when looking at the display through polarized sunglasses.

Bio-based feedstock and new recycling technology for PA66

Asahi Kasei will display a bio-based and biodegradable cellulose nano fiber (CNF). This material is made from cotton linter and features a high heat resistance and network-forming ability. CNF-reinforced polyamide shows a thixotropic behavior, making it highly suitable for 3D printing applications in terms of easy printing, dimensional accuracy, smooth appearance, and mechanical performance. Furthermore, CNF has superior material recyclability compared to glass fibers.

Cleaning the equipment after processing the plastics in an efficient and cost-effective manner is a major challenge for many companies. Asaclean is the worldwide leader in commercial purging compounds. Asaclean purges are optimized for injection molding, extrusion, film and sheet, blow-molding, and blown-film applications. Its benefits include faster changeovers/reduced downtime, effective removal of color/carbon contamination, reduced screw-pulls, lower scrap/reject rate, increased productivity, and greater cost savings.

The company will also present its comprehensive solutions for establishing a sustainable life cycle for PA66 utilizing bio-based feedstock and a new technology for chemical recycling. Together with Japanese partner company Microwave Chemical, the company is working on a new technology for chemical recycling of PA66. The process utilizes microwaves to depolymerize automotive airbags and other PA66 parts and directly obtain the monomers hexamethylenediamine (HMD) and adipic acid (ADA), which is expected to be accomplished at high yield with low energy consumption. The monomers obtained can then be used to manufacture new PA66.

Digitally Controlled Grinders For Energy-Saving Plastics Recycling

At Fakuma, Hellweg Maschinenbau will be presenting a selection of its pioneering, digitally controlled grinders for efficient, energy-saving plastics recycling at booth A1-1005 in hall A1. These include the MDSi 340/150 Smart Control machine-side grinder with fill level monitoring, the MDSi 600/300 Smart Control Plus central grinder and the MDSGi 1500/600 as a representative of a newly developed series of wet grinders with forced feed which have particularly low power consumption.

The MDSi 340/150 Smart Control machine-side grinder is the highest power model of the series with drive powers of 1.5  kW to 4 kW for grinding capacities of 10 kg/h to 80 kg/h. Its primary application is to save raw materials by enabling the recirculation of even the bulkiest sprue stars, spiders or ladders directly beside one or more injection molding machines. Material can be fed in by chute, feed hopper or conveyor belt, and discharged by suction. A film edge strip feeder is available as an option.

Hellweg’s 300 series central grinders combine a compact design with high performance. Thanks to the sturdy machine housing and the high moment of inertia of the massive, solid rotor they enable powerful grinding of thick-walled moldings, sheets, sprue cakes, pipes and profiles and, when using the special BR rotor, even single-stage shredding of solid lumps from production start-ups. The MDSi 600/300 Smart Control Plus version on display at Fakuma features power consumption analysis to optimize economy and automated lubrication with Bluetooth monitoring to minimize maintenance effort.

Hellweg will be presenting the new MDSGi 1500/600 wet grinder featuring a forced feed system for film recycling to visitors as a 3D printed model due to its considerable weight of around 25 metric tons. In addition to its rugged, durable design typical of this manufacturer, it offers an unprecedentedly good ratio of throughput to energy consumption, enabling very low operating costs. Its cutting geometry is also outstanding, producing flakes of consistently optimum quality, as well as a particle size distribution and geometry which are perfect for further processing with a very low proportion of unusable “fines”.

Smart Control for Optimized Operation

All these systems feature Hellweg’s in-house developed digital Smart Control System which captures parameters such as power consumption, motor speed and bearing temperatures, as well as blade, screen and V belt status. Because the control system is capable of continuously optimizing the relationship between motor load and throughput, it ensures particularly economical operation while requiring little input from operators. Smart Control is generally available for all models and sizes of Hellweg’s systems, starting from the 150 series machine-side grinders for granulating small parts and sprues up to the 600 series heavy duty grinders designed for the toughest applications.

swop 2023: International packaging trends and innovations in Shanghai

In 2023, swop returns and promises fascinating insights into China’s packaging industry and its application sectors. For international and regional suppliers, this is the most important platform for contacts and business in the region.

From 22 to 24 November, the international processing & packaging industry will flock to the booming metropolis of Shanghai again. Approximately 900 exhibitors will be present at the Shanghai World of Packaging (swop), bringing together notable packaging companies and experts from China and all over the world. Numerous specials and projects, among them global discussion rounds, sustainable best cases, intelligent machines, innovative packaging design, functional and safer materials and much more, all showcase the future of packaging.
“swop opens doors to the packaging industry in China. With its focus on the growing Asian market, it offers enormous potential for internationally active packaging companies and supports innovative concepts for how these opportunities can best be used”, says Thomas Dohse, Director of interpack alliance. swop is being jointly organised by Messe Düsseldorf Shanghai and Adsale Exhibition Services, and is part of the global portfolio of interpack.
In order to support companies making use of the promising opportunities in China, this year swop again offers special information platforms as well as numerous parallel events.
Global knowledge exchange
The format “International Packaging Dialogue” brings renowned packaging experts together. From the new European regulations for materials with food contact to the creativity of French packaging design to insights into the use of AI on the Japanese market – knowledge is shared at a global level, there is room for discussion and there are new horizons to be discovered.
Products for daily living
For the fourth time in a row, swop and the platform “Home of Packaging” are  organising the FMCG pavilion together. This features packaging for the huge market of “fast moving consumer goods”. Two special areas of focus are solutions for products of daily living as well as packaging for food and beverages. The “FCMG Infinity Zone” presents bestsellers in sustainability.
ODM and OEM providers
Companies interested in an ODM (original design manufacturer) and OEM (original equipment manufacturer) approach can also benefit from a visit to swop. The range includes packaging services like product planning, research and development, packaging design or the procurement of packaging materials.
A wide range of sustainable solutions
Under the name of “Green Power”, swop has gathered around 150 providers of sustainable packaging solutions, for example biologically degradable materials, recycled plastics, cellulose forming, multi-use packaging, environmentally friendly printing materials and more.
Innovative packaging designs and concepts
Faced with the continuous changes in the FMCG market and changing consumer habits, how can you quickly gain the attention of consumers? In cooperation with swop, “Sivapack Studio” is combining the powers of different designers to present currently successful packaging designs and packaging concepts that will be key for the future. All this is happening at the special exhibition area “Packaging Design and Marketing”. Another highlight is the forum “AI Drives the Future”. The focus here is on the impact of artificial intelligence on the global trends within packaging development, from the perspective of marketing and design.
Smart packaging machines
In the “Smart Packaging & Personalized Packaging Equipment Zone”, visitors can experience automated production systems which lower costs and improve efficiency. Approximately 300 suppliers of packaging machines and systems are present here. Beyond this, there is a special segment concerning the topic of ready-made meals and packaging for fresh food which presents progressive technologies for lengthening shelf life.
Reducing food waste
At swop, the SAVE FOOD initiate by Messe Düsseldorf and interpack will not only call attention to reducing food loss and food waste, but also emphasise the importance of sustainable design in achieving this goal. For the first time, the SAVE FOOD DESIGN and SUSTAINABILITY DESIGN AWARD will be presented to exhibitors to honour innovative solutions in these fields. Beyond this, visitors can expect a comprehensive lecture programme that will cast a light on current trends and developments within food packaging and processing.
 Functional and safe packaging materials
The range at swop includes a variety of packaging materials which ensure high barrier properties, freshness, anti-microbial and humidity-resistant properties, resistance to heat and cold as well as sustainability, and which guarantee product safety and quality. Among the materials on exhibition are PE, HDPE, LDPE, PET, PC, PVC, PS, PET, EVOH, biologically degradable materials like PLA/PHA/PBAT, bio-based materials and recyclable materials.
E-commerce & express logistics
This year swop is again presenting the newest solutions in logistics and packaging, which meet the requirements of modern consumers through fast, safe and environmentally friendly logistics services. Among these are buffer / transport / paper packaging like foam, buffer bags, air cushions, pallets, wooden crates, perimeter crates, special packaging, multi-use containers, pulp moulding, honeycomb cardboard, kraft paper bags made of corrugated cardboard, and much more. Further, logistic packaging equipment like foam equipment, pulp forming machines, buffer bag machines and machines for opening, closing and filling crates are on display.
